Nah, things like that "1-2-3-4" song and "Coming Out of the Dark", I think those two songs came out when I was only one but I do remember seeing those videos for the songs at two or three, lol. My dad didn't even record them tho. lol And he was usually recording videos of songs he dug.

Your dad didn't record them because 1-2-3-4 and COFTD were both crap:)

Speaking of her "Minnie runs" I always wondered since Mariah is so hot for doing covers, why has she never covered Minnie's "Lovin' You"? I mean, that certainly would have been another #1 for her. Everybody loves that song and since she obviously patterned her high octave got the dogs yelping cuz it hurts their ears pitched runs from Minnie, then to me, I always found it odd that she never made a remake of Lovin' You?

I'm saying, what is she waiting for? THAT'S the song she should be covering. lol Not no damn Foreigner. lol

Now, I actually liked "Fantasy" which is the Tom Tom Club's "Genius of Love". I always liked her version of that. Not more than the o.g. but it's alright. I liked her cover of "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life" and "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On". Now, I really like the o.g versions of those songs anyway but I thought Mariah's versions were alright. I LOVE Journey and Mariah's version was.....She can't fuck with Steve Perry on that. I like Forigner a lot and I always liked this song too. I can see Mariah doing this song just like all of her other covers. But Mariah probably should have done this in the 90's when she would still sing and practice and work her voice more. NOT just when it came time to record an album or do a tour. But in between when she's on vacation or at home or in the car. Even people with hellified vocals, Marvin, Aretha, Whitney (In her glory days), Sam Cooke, Luther, they would sing all the time. Always kept their chops up. After Aretha stopped singing for awhile and she put on too much weight for herself, it affected her singing. Even in the mid 80's, although she had her a hit, she couldn't just go in the studio and wham, one take like she used to. She hadn't been singing a lot so it was more work. And that's with Aretha, who always had hella range and power. Aretha, in the 60's and 70's, could straight BLOW. Jennifer Hudson, is another female vocalist. That chile can straight SANG! Period. But she sounds like she loves singing and that she practices and works her voice as well.

Harlepolis

Her WHOLE career is a tribute to the soprano trinity(Deniece, Syreeta & Minnie).

I wouldn't want her to cover "Lovin' You", its redundant and the least original idea ever since damn near EVERYBODY covered the song.

I'd love for her to sing one of the songs from Minnie's reportoire though, maybe Love and Its Glory or even Can You Feel What I'm Saying?,,,,but not "Loving You".

It was just okay for me. I don't hold a lot of hope for the upcoming CD. Out of the hundreds of songs she could have covered by some of the female singers who inspired her, why on earth she'd choose this one, I'll never know. Mariah needs some advisors on her team who are willing to tell her the truth!

Alright Harlepolis....what it is? How is it "redundant" if Mariah covered Lovin U? Who is EVERYBODY that has covered this song? The only person that I know of that I ever heard played on the radio doing this as a cover is Shanice. That was in 92 wasn't it? Now maybe that's WHY Mariah never fucked with it cuz Shanice did it. I don't know who all the "everybody" else is who covered the song. Somebody hip me to that. But my thought process is to me, no other female vocalist is as connected to Ripperton more than Mariah. And that's because no other vocalist has evoked Minnie MORE than Mariah has. So because of that, I always thought Lovin You was a shoe in for Mariah to cover. This of course when she was younger and she MIGHT have been able to pull it off. That's one reason I always wanted to hear her do it. To see how well she could have got down. Also, as much as THAT, for me, I always thought that it would have been a sort of "passing the torch" as well as Mariah paying tribute to Minnie. That's how I would have seen it. That would have been a nice touch. Like when Whitney covered "I Am Every Woman", she didn't try to sing it like Chaka but she did acknowledge Chaka at the end of the song. Which I thought was cool. I think Mariah could have easily been like "Shanice? Hell, I can give a damn about a Shanice. That girl can't out blow me!" And anybody else who has covered the song. Again, maybe that's why Mariah never did it. But Lovin You is such an epic song that is so connected with not only Minnie but a certain STYLE of singing. A style that Mariah had HEAVILY patterened herself on. I think because of that, it would have been cool for her to do it. Because what it symbolizes and that is more connected with Mariah than Shanice or anyone else who covered it.

http://www.allmusic.com/c...=17:919217

The torch has been passed since 1990, I thought that was already established nod

Personally, I find her subtle "odes/tributes" to Minnie to be FAR more effective and genuine than an outright cover of Lovin' You which is the expected thing to do since she's the alleged "5 high octaves" diva, right? lol

Been there, done that! Listen to 4th Of July, Subtle Invitation, Bliss(and many others). Now these songs are examples of the grandest hat-tip that Ms.Carey could pay to Ms.Riperton,,,,something Shanice wouldn't come up & chose the easy way out.

Mind you, I'm not commanding Mariah for covering some of the songs(some were bad choices, unoriginal, insincere and hell, it eliminated all the hard work that was in the process, which killed the spirit of the song IMO).

Thats EXACTLY how I feel about Nippy's version of "Every Woman" and Shanice' infamous cover of Minnie,,,,it lacked hard work and originality and instead it gave me this random spur-of-the-moment feel. I have a feeling that Mariah respects Minnie TOO much to put herself in that predicament and chose more "subtle" methods to pay her respect for Minnie.

But then again lol I'm extremely biased when it comes to Chaka & Minnie shrug when somebody sings their songs,,,its a total waste of time, energy and money that should've been saved instead.

All those singers who covered Chaka should've taken a tip from Rahsaan Patterson's notebook and adopted his method to show their respect to her as opposed to cover her songs just like that,,,,,just as they should take Mariah's method for doing the same to Minnie.

You know she'd be whispering through half of it. disbelief She couldn't pull off a good tribute to Cherelle, so I certainly don't think she still has it in her to do a good tribute to Minnie. Personally, I think Mariah should just give up on covers altogether. shrug

[Edited 9/2/09 14:34pm]

Iam surprised Mariah's voice is supposedly busted already also? Doesn't she have voice coaches? Surely they tell her to work on her voice every day? I know she ain't the only one, but as you mentioned, people like Luther could still do it past 40. It is obviously harder when you get older, but keeping your voice in shape should be no.1 priority....

... Look at opera singers. They can do silly high multi octave shit like Minni ripperton etc and then some.. (I hate that horrible high pitched falsetto or whatever it is, but to each their own), and could obviously sing circles around any pop singer in general, but they train their voices hard, all their lives, all the time. Iam not saying pop stars like Mariah should follow their sorta regimen, but obviously she could of worked harder on it and Iam surprised she didn't do so.

Whitneys vocal power, or lack of it these days when compared to her hey day, I presume is down to drugs and again, lack of proper training?
