Not as bad as I thought it would be either. Nothing can touch the original (one of the first major pop songs with a gospel group on chorus, done many times since of course)
I agree with Paisleypark, it gets better, but is much too short on a song that is all about building and building. She even does the same adlibs as the original ("lets talk about love" or whatever it is). Her voice cant touch the original singer though. Not as bad as her cover of "Against all odds" LOL.

Mariah could've totally changed the song if she wanted to, bring a new energy to it.

Mariah does not oversing on this one. On songs Wally did like "without you", Mariah oversang and it was horrible. Wally also did this previous with Michael Bolton on hurrendous covers like "When a man loves a woman" etc... This performance though is actually quite restrained for her. Maybe its because she cant belt out like she used to, but Iam all for it in this case.

Yes or maybe her voice is just shot so she can't She could've shortened the tempo rather than keep the tempo in its original key if she was having trouble. Obviously she probably told them "go down so I can hit my Minnie note."

OMG, this is the type of material I want her to sing
Even though her voice is lacking strength, the emotional delivery is STILL apparent,,,,,which is the most essential element to me.

When she released Obsessed they kept on hating about her trying too hard with hip hop songs and now she releases a nice ballad, no less, and they're still hating I'm actually very excited about the album now

Great, "I want to know what love is" with a (Vainandy, listen up! ) shit-hop beat. The only thing which is missing is the guest rapper.
On top of that, the whole build-up of the song towards the "gospel section" at the end is ruined. All of a sudden, there are 100 voices coming out of nowhere. Is there anyone left in the pop business nowadays who is capable of doing proper production?

It's a horrible song to begin with so she doesn't really ruin anything.
It's just as boring and predictable and tacky. But its not her worst. Something tells me that its her and her hubby's wedding dance song. I'm not mad at you, I'm mad at the dirt.

Please no more hip hop producers making beats for singers....sometimes it works but most of the time with songs like these real musicians need to be taken advantage. Straight Jacket Funk Affair

I mean I cannot really comprehend how her fans seem to adore this or for that matter other covers of hers such as Against All Odds [Edited 9/1/09 6:32am]

They just want to hear her sing. I think it's an average song. Music doesn't have to be so serious and pretentious all the time

Music doesn't have to be so serious and pretentious all the time I was not wondering why the fans like Mariah herself or her music in general. I admit I like a lot of stuff by her myself (especially the earlier stuff) and even though I own just one cd of hers I do follow her career. I was wondering how some fans are so excited about some of her cover versions which in my ears (which of course may be tone-deaf or something) are horrible:)

Other than the original, I'm a fan of Tina Arena's, Wynona's and Leela James'.
