How many MG fans are there in here and what's your favourite album of his?
I can't actually decide myself as i like all his albums from What's Going On to In Our Lifetime. That's six truly great albums in a row. I still don't think this man gets enough props for his work. Some folks i know hadn't even heard of him!!! What the fcuk is that about? Time to big-up the Marvin, eh!

Album-wise Marvin's career was sketchy to me. Nothing in his career comes remotely close to the power of the What's Going On album. There are songs here and there that are flat out classics even if I can't listen to the overplayed "Let's Get It On" anymore, and regardless of what albums they're from. But if I have to choose one album by him it's WGO by a wide margin. Regardless of genre it's elite.

I grew up listening to all of Marvin Gaye's albums. My relatives had all of his albums, from the first to the last. He was a true legendary icon to us before the rest of the world knew him. Early on TV in the 60's he was a sex symbol and hearthrob then. He embraced it and resented it at times. times. He composed, played, wrote and arranged. He could collaborate with anyone as well. What's Goin' On cemented his musical place in history. I also loved Let's Get It On, I Want You, Trouble Man, Here, My Dear and Midnight Love. I truly miss him.

While I agree that Whats Going On is a masterpiece, my all time favorite Marvin Gaye album has to be Here, My Dear. That is arguably the most personal album ever released and it is the only Gaye album completely arranged, composed and produced by Gaye. Here, My Dear is my favorite hands down.

"What's Going On" was the first of his albums I bought - and it affected me deeply. Coming up a close 2nd place is "Let's Get It On"...I love that track "If I Should Die 2nite".

His death was tragic. Check The Commodores' tribute 2 him and others, "Nightshift".

My favorite Marvin Gaye album is 1973's 'Let's Get It On'.That record is a masterpiece! Yes,the title track is overplayed and I get sick of hearing it,but there are some real gems on this album."Come Get To This","Distant Lover" and "Please Don't Don't Go (Once You Go Away)" are all kickass songs.And "You Sure To Love To Ball" is too sexy for words.
I also love "Keep Gettin It On",which is basically just a Part 2 of "Let's Get It On".


Right now,Motown/Universal is re-mastering Marvin's 'I Want You' album (1976).They're gonna make it a 2-CD expanded edition with bonus tracks,alternate versions,outtakes,etc
(like the way they re-mastered the 'What's Going On' and 'Let's Get It On' CDs).It was supposed to come out last year but I am told it will definitely be released sometime this year.

I agree with Davideye. Let's get it on is the best. I also have his box set and it's terrific. I love his voice and his message.

I SOOO hate it when ppl get caught up in his image being the "Ladies Man", you dig it?? The ego tripping out-Lets Get It On-Sexual Healing kinda brotha and go down by saying that Babyface & R.Kelly our the next Marvin Gaye(s). Yes, the man is a great love poet but he had MANY MANY to offer and they just 4get them all. I always get in big arguments about this stuff.

They don't know that he got some strong statments in his music even in some of the love songs.

My BEST LPs are:

Whats Going On & Lets Get It On(I got the Delux Editions and they're true musts). Distant Lover brings tears to my eyes esp the live version. At the end, when he said "Please come back baby,,oooh please!" RIGHT THERE!! damn, you just can't feel nothing but moved.

Here My Dear-4 the simple fact that it was xlusivly produced/arranged/composed and pre4med by the man himself AND he sho nailed that mofo.

every album since What's Goin' On is my favorite album by Marvin. If I absolutely had to choose I would pick Here My Dear.

I love Marvin and I think that no-one should cover his songs because they are sacred! The other day I watched Usher butcher What's Going On (8701 tour dvd)...NOONE can do justice to Marvin songs.

IMO he was and still is one of the greatest singers of all-time and a true innovator of R'n'B and SHOULD have gotten more accolades when he was around (did u know that he only won a Grammy in for Sexual Healing WTF!!!). These days judging by this year's Grammy nominations overrated GARBAGE wins

I find it astonishing & disappointing that Marvin's work is so negligently overlooked round ur neck of the woods. The region in which i reside could scarcely b described as a hotbed of soul yet Marvin rightly enjoys enduring popularity here.

Competition was FIERCE in Marvin's day! Aretha released gems like "I Never Loved A Man", "Spirit In The Dark", "Lady Soul",and "Young Gifted & Black". Stevie was at his inspirational best via albums of the calibre of "Talking Book", "Fulfillingness' 1st Finale" and "Songs In The Key Of Life". Al Green hit the giddy heights with "I'm Still In Love With You" and "Call Me". Then our Marv had 2 contend with the occasional masterpiece from hugely talented contemporaries such as the O'Jays ("Back Stabbers"), Curtis Mayfield ("Superfly"), Isaac Hayes ("Hot Buttered Soul") and Earth,Wind & Fire ("That's The Way Of The World").
Well personally, though i'm sure "Here,My Dear" can hold its head up in such lofty company, i reckon Marvin ups the ante with "What's Going On" (& then some!). It's 1 of my all-time favourite records &, if there's a better album within its genre, i've certainly not heard it (& that includes "Innervisions")!

and I would add that What's Going On is the greatest "concept" album I've ever heard (and I've heard many! )

Marvin was, in the words of Berry Gordy, "the truest artist I've ever known".

Marvin would spend thousands on a track, getting all parts of the arrangement in meticulous order before overdubs. Then when that was out of the way, he'd sit in front of the mike and just sing...with no lyrics or sheets with ideas in front of him...he'd just sing.

Art Stewart (his engineer) said that most of the time he'd just start singing about what may have happen to him that day or what was going on in his life at the time and how it made him feel. But NEVER any written lyrics!! He did pretty much the whole Let's Get It On album that way as well as Here My Dear.

Now THAT'S an ARTIST!!!
