I think Morrissey is the kind of artist with no middle ground: you either love him or hate him.

I belong to the second group: he annoys the hell out of me. He seems such a selfabsorbed poser and his voice is just too whiney sounding for me (the same reason why I can't stand Thom Yorke).

Thats the main reason i haver never put interest discovering the music of the Smiths (aka listening to their albums).

Later on i did obtain a live cover-version of the Smiths-song 'There is a letter and it never goes out' by Neil Finn with Johnny Mar on the guitar. I really love that song in that version, so maybe the Smiths could indeed write great songs. BUT, as I said, Morrisey just withholds me from listening to their music.

this post reminded me, there ARE some smiths covers i can tolerate, so i guess i don't have a problem with their melodies or always even with their words - i like the smiths cover on the mark ronson album, for example.

and it's weird, i always hear from fellow morrissey-haters that his voice is annoying like thom yorke's voice. but i happen to like thom yorke's voice. i think for me, it's that morrissey sounds SOOOOO affected, and while i can get into affected vocals now and then, i just can't abide what he does. meanwhile, i think thom yorke's vocals, love 'em or hate 'em, sound pretty straightforward. that's what he sounds like what he sings. he's not trying to put on any airs or sing in any romanticized, affected style, which i guess makes him more tolerable to me?

Don't you mean "there is a LIGHT that never goes out"?

I disagree with you. The way Thom Yorke sings really puts me off, he sounds like a misanthrope OVER-obsessed with his own misery. He might have the right intentions while singing like that, but its too one-dimensional to me, its really getting on my nerves (in a bad way).

The tone and delivery of a singer are very important to me when it comes to liking vs not-liking artists and bands, and both Morrisey and Thom Yorke just get on my nerves, it spoils the rest of their music to me.

is it more thom yorke's vocals or his lyrics that bother you? or is it the combination of the two? i guess my point is that i think this is what thom yorke's voice sounds like whether he's doing a big stadium concert or if he's singing to himself in the car. meanwhile, i really don't think morrissey's singing voice, as we know it, is what he sounds like when he's humming to himself in the garden. that voice sounds totally put on to me. and that's half of what bugs me about it.

English is not my mother language, so I go with the tone of the voice and the delivery first. And on that level, Thom Yorke annoys me allready. He might mean it well, but it puts me off immediately.
There is something over-earnest in his delivery, and the music of his band, a lack of self-irony and playfullness that just irrates me.

When it comes to Morrisey its both his voice and his 'attitude'. He just gives me the feeling: why should I care how you struggle with life, and with your sexuality when its all presented in such a self-absorbed and whining way?

The Smiths are pretty great. Have only heard some solo songs, but it didn't really make me hungry for anything further. Love "Sing Your Life".

Yeah I like him.

Have you listened to 'Vauxhall And I'?

It may be sacrilegious to say this, but I love that album as much as anything The Smiths have done. boxed

His other stuff is a lot more inconsistent.

No. I haven't heard Vauxhall and I. hmmm

I love The Smiths and Morrissey, I own a bulk of The Smiths, but the only Morrissey I own are Viva Hate, and the previous three albums he's released.

I'm glad when I get into an artist twenty years into their career because I don't have to bitch about new releases compared to the nostalgia-heralded older ones, so yeah, I really enjoy Quarry, Ringleader, and Refusal.

I also got to see him in a small indoor venue in summer 2007, holy shit what an enjoyable experience.

I have to quote what he said during the show about the Live 8 or whatever concert that was going on back then:

"Do you really think Madonna cares about climate change?"
(audience applause)
"If Madonna could make a COAT out of climate change, she'd WEAR it."
(audience applause)
"And if Madonna could make a coat out of that small black child, she'd wear it, too."
(uncomfortable audience laughter)

We think of Morrisey as a coward.

Who has refused to come out of the closet, even though everybody knows he loves cock.
Why is he scared of admitting it?

Also, he supports the BNP, a racist nazi party, so therefore he is a grade A cunt.

I don't care how many flowers and petals he rubs over his face and cock, he can go and fuck off if he supports racists like that.

Fuck Morrisey anyway, Johnny Marr did all the best work anyway.

Prefer The Smiths, but I like Morrissey. Was disappointed with 'Ringleader' after the consistent brilliance of 'You Are The Quarry'. I'm not a huge fan and I don't follow everything he's up to, but I keep an eye on him from time to time.

(I don't think he's scared of admitting anything- I just think he likes to play with imagery and wants his music to be universal instead of just having one reading- this way everyone can play as listeners.)

Also, he supports the BNP, a racist nazi party, so therefore he is a grade A cunt.

(He does NOT support the BNP- you obviously know very little in terms of who and what he supports- if you are referencing songs like "National Front Disco" then you have never read the lyrics. Also don't believe everything you've read in the NME) wink

I don't care how many flowers and petals he rubs over his face and cock, he can go and fuck off if he supports racists like that.

(Sounds like you are the one who is stuck with an 80's image of Morrissey- it's 2009, things have moved on.)

Fuck Morrisey anyway, Johnny Marr did all the best work anyway.

(Johnny produced some great music, but would have been another struggling guitarist without the power of Morrissey's lyrics- it takes two to...um...not tango)

Did his best stuff with The Smiths. His solo career has been patchy, but he's still doing some great songs here and there like "You Have Killed Me", "This World is Full of Crushing Bores", and "I Just Want To See The Boy Happy".

I'm always reminded of the sentiments in their song Panic.
