Not to mention Hudson's version has a certain tenderness in the beginning that Holliday's lacks. Holliday (to me anyway) starts attacking the song in the beginning. It's like the Broadway version had her beating the shit out of him, while Hudson's version had the character upset and building up her anger. In Holliday's stage performance, you see her build up, but as a listener, it sounds like she's ready to kick his ass and make him stay. [Edited 8/27/09 15:05pm] ...and what man wants his ass kicked by a woman who demands to stay? A henpecked man unless he's just picked by the right hen. Jennifer Holiday comes across as angry lover that can't let go. The message you are about to hear are not meant for transmission. Should ONLY be accessed in the privacy of your mind. Jennifer Holiday has a stank attitude, so I vote for Jennifer Hudson.
She is prettier and built up better. I am not sure what's wrong, but it's probably your fault!

NOW THIS IS A BATTLE WORTH DISCUSSING. Dreamgirls was my first Broadway experience as a child. Even as a child, I felt the emotion of Jennifer Holiday's performance of "And I'm Telling You". The song will always be Ms. Holiday's signature.
Jennifer Hudson is a powerhouse that definately did this song justice bringing myself and many others to tears in the movie theater. Jennifer Hudson's rendition was no less of a showstopper. It would be politically correct to choose the original, but this is one debate that I cannot choose. Both women put their own stamp on the legendary song. Honorable mention: Frenchie Davis, the American Idol castoff, also sang the hell out of this song. Frenchie Davis And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going Dreamgirls
A stupid man’s report of what a clever man says can never be accurate, because he unconciously translates what he hears into something he can understand.

This is just another example of one of those things where I would just automatically think there would be a universal opinion. This is CLEARLY Jennifer Holiday's song. And the fact she sang it LIVE day in and day out says a lot.
In terms of these performances, I love Holliday's LIVE version better than Hudson's STUDIO version here. And I say that as a big Hudson fan. I think Hudson did a great job and don't believe there is no contemporary artist who could have done it better but Holliday in her prime gets my vote a million times over Hudson in hers. I am convinced Beyonce's career would not be where it is, if she had dark skin.

I am SO territorial when it comes to Jennifer Hudson. I will scratch someone blind for talkin smack on her So there is no dissing Jennifer Hudson on this but there just is no contest or comparison. I doubt she'd disagree. 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740
