Aretha Franklin or Patti LaBelle

Many times the contrasts or similarities have been whispered or bluntly stated -who is the Queen, the ultimately soul diva of all-time, the best, the one, the it -
ARETHA FRANKLIN or PATTI LABELLE

Aretha Louise Franklin, born March 25, 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee
Patricia Louise Holte, born May 24, 1944 in Philadelphia, Pennnsylvania

Both have a loyal legion of fans, fanatics and admirers. Both come with pipes, and a catalog of albums from the Sixties to the new Millenium (and in Franklin's case back to 1956 with her gospel debut that included a 14 year old singing "Precious Lord" live in Oakland, California).

Franklin has 18 Grammys
LaBelle has 2 Grammys

Franklin has 20 #1 R&B Singles; 2 Hot 100 Pop #1 Singles
LaBelle has 2 #1 R&B Singles, 1 Hot 100 Pop #1 Single

Franklin has 4 American Music Awards
LaBelle has 1 American Music Award

Franklin has earned 15 RIAA Gold singles; 16 Gold Albums; 3 Platinum Albums
LaBelle has earned 2 RIAA Gold singles; 4 Gold Albums (as a solo act); 1 Platinum Album

Aretha has better songs. Patti's voice is currently better than Aretha's and she is also the better performer.
I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

Aretha Franklin once possesed the greatest voice in popular music, all included. Time, aging, bad lifestyle choices, etc. have all taken their toll on the vocal pipes - but still she is relevant after 5 decades. With all of her plumpness and gawdy outfits and bizzaro-divatude - I will take her over Patty LaBelle anyday.
Aretha's songs are like the soundtrack of our lives, Patti is like, next...
The records, the awards, the accolades and honors all speak for themselves.
Franklin may not be what she used to be, but her legacy is intact.

Another HOT debate (now this is what I come to the org for). I love both legendary diva's. Both have vocals that are extremely powerful. Both can tear a church up. The biggest difference between these artist is the theatrics of Patti Labelle (which I love-I am still trying to catch a shoe at one of her concerts). These are the two strongest voices in popular music that the young "diva's" can only aspire to.
