As far as I can remember very few black artists have played stadiums in The United States. Janet Tina,Mariah, and WHitney have all played stadiums around the world but Prince and Michael are the only ones in The US.

Sales are usuualy higher around the world so to be able to play stadiums in The States is abig accomplishment. Michael Played then in The US on The'84 Victory Tour but went to arenas on The Bad Tour in '88 which sadly was his last US. Prince Played one stadium date ,the last on The Purple Rain Tour.

This show was made larger since he'd just canceled The Purple Rain European Tour. I do believe like Michael he does stadiums everywhere else in The World.
Prince probrably like doing arenas in The US since he like intement shows. He'd do clubs and theaters the rest of his life if he could.

So there are very few black artists whom can do stadiiums. They being mostly 80s artists whom are Pop artists mixing Sould with Rock and Dance. Janet may not anymore but I know she opened the 1990 Rythm Nation tour at The Tokyodome and has ended 2 of her's at Honalulu's ALoha Stadium(sorta nonUS).But have any artists latley climbed to the status of Michael or even Prince. Rihanna,Beyonce.Chris Brown,Neyo,Ciara, and even Usher may be big but I don't think any of them have done stadiums outside or definetly inside The US.

Hold up! timeout

Honolulu is in Hawaii. Hawaii IS the 50th state of the United States. There's no "sorta nonUS" about it. I know the Birthers want to believe there is but too bad! cool

... Mandrill?

Mandrill have played pretty much nothing but stadiums in the 1970s. They still hold the 80,000 attendance record at RFK stadium in NYC, when they headlined there in 1972.

I didn't read the other threads, but the synopsis of this one - Prince and Michael are the only ones in The US who have played stadiums - has been proven wrong.

The picture posted of Brother Rick is a perfect example. I remember my folks would go to the stadium shows down south (late 70's) and see the Budwiser Superfests. Rick, Maze, The Bar-Kays, Kool & The Gang, Lakeside, Mother's Finest, and others would play starting around noon until the evening.

"Wattstax" was a classic example too until they stopped doing it in 1976.

(...we do need a thread on Mother's Finest..they're WAY underrated).

Until they stopped doing it? Wattstax was a one-time event in 1972, which is why I didn't bring it up on this thread. By 1976, Stax had been bankrupt and closed for over a year.

I think stadium tours went out in the 70s. In the 80s, they started doing more arenas. I know when the Budweiser Superfest used to come to my area, it was played at Reunion Arena (Dallas). It was done that way until the late 90s, then they moved it to the Starplex (amphitheater).

Really? I was watching "American Gangster" (the series) the other night and they were talking about the element in LA back in the 70's. One of the people they mentioned talked about the "good" he did for the community..(I think it was Tookie..BBQ's, block parties, etc) and it mentioned a quick blurb about the Wattstax concerts.

The narrator (Ving Rhames) said the Wattstax concerts went on until 1976 until the gang atmosphere got so bad that they were cancelled.

But I think you're right MrSoulPower because I only recall the "one" Wattstax concert w/ Rufus and Issac..Never heard about any others.

You must remember, Wattstax was not a tour, but an event (similar to LiveAid, FarmAid, etc). It took place only one time to help the victim of the riots in Watts (if I recall this correctly).

That's correct. I have the DVD on the whole event. It even included exerpts of dialogues with people that were there including a then little known Richard Pryor.

I think a better question is why wasn't Purple Rain or Let's Go Crazy played on any rock stations.

"Let's Go Crazy", "Purple Rain" and "When Doves Cry" were all played on rock stations in the states. Peak positions on Billboard's rock airplay chart:

Little Red Corvette - 17
When Doves Cry - 31
Let's Go Crazy - 19
Purple Rain - 18
Raspberry Beret - 40

Great.

I am talking about your pure rock stations.

We have an pure rock oldies station here and I call in every now and then and request Purple rain or Let's Go Crazy and they laugh and hang up.

Way back in the 1980's we used to call WKDF in Nashville and beg them to play some of Prince's rock stuff and they would not do it.

You asked why Prince wasn't played on rock stations and I gave you stats showing he was when those songs in particular were current. You didn't specify classic rock stations which use a much tighter playlist.

I've heard his older material played on AC stations, but not classic rock.

I guess it all depends on where you live. Some cities don't have amphitheaters to accommodate the audience.

No problem.
The "Charts" back in the 1980's were called Pop/Rock which included everything .

My point was that it's very hard to get an artist like Prince played on Classic Rock stations even though Purple Rain and Let's Go Crazy fit the rock bill. You could listen to Van Halen on every station but Prince was played only on R&B sations or Pop/Top 40.

I think rock station playlists in the 80s were a little more open in general and the stations that made up the rock chart panel back then included stations that leaned heavily towards new wave (before the separate modern rock chart was created in 1988) so maybe those stations had a strong influence on how well Prince did on the rock chart. I specifically remember hearing Prince occasionally on the new wave station here in New York, WLIR.
