I get exactly what you are saying, though I mostly disagree.
Personally I think she can sing. She is certainly not the greatest, but she is expressive & is more than capable of delivering a song.
Also, a technically perfect vocal is a fractionally small element to deserving a record deal. It is the entertainment industry, & entertain is exactly what she does! She is a good pop songwriter, & an engaging performer with a strong sense of style. If this weren't true that she doesn't deserve a deal based on her vocal ability, Prince probably wouldn't have made it past the Dirty Mind period, as his live vocals were far from perfect.

The point I was making about it being commonplace for vocals to be processed isn't a reflection of the singer. As a producer myself, I know that it is almost compulsory (in most musical genres) to process & "clean up" vocals this way. Even if the vocalist is capable. (it came into practice to make those that can't sing, sound good... but has since been used across the board to make everything sound much more uniform & polished)
It's like in print media, where images are almost always airbrushed & retouched... even if the subject of the image is naturally beautiful.

I personally find it sad that it is going this way, but it's not the fault of the artists... more that of the "system" & consumer demand.

I believe that Gaga deserves to be where she is, & as I have said, I feel it fortunate that she has come along. Love her or hate her, she serves to break up the mediocrity that dominates. I am optimistic about what we may see in music over the coming years.

(D')

well i think the entertainment comes from the vocals more nina simone didnt dance much or dress crezeh but the entertainment was 100%
i think gaga can sing too, its just embarrassing when she sounds pretty much nothing like she does on CD
but amy winehouse suprises you cos she sounds better live smile

This boils down to the fact that music & entertainment are completely subjective. 'Coz u r quite right about Nina Simone. But then if u take James Brown, he is the total opposite. He didn't REALLY sing as such. It was all about the energy, the raw expression & the dance. Neither are any less credible as musicians or entertainers.
For me, Gaga falls into the James Brown/George Clinton kinda category, which is indeed a far cry from the likes of Nina Simone & her contemporary counterparts. They simply occupy completely different ends of the market.

(D)

(on a side note... I'v heard Amy live, & it's been a LOONGG time since she sounded as good as her records on stage. Particularly @ the Prince aftershow.
But that's a whole other debate.... Needless to say, I do hope she pulls it back as she had the potential to be incredible!)

I bet she stayed up all night writing those lyrics.

IMO the woman(?) is a joke of a performer and I fail to see why she's getting all the hype she does. Never mind any dodgy comparisons to Prince -what makes her so effin' great that people talk about her like she's the greatest thing since sliced Beatles?

really, if you put aside the biasness, you can really realate to how Lady Gaga is mirroring Prince in early fame in a way.

and Bowie. and Madonna. and Debbie Harry. and Grace Jones... the list goes on and on. Prince actually comes pretty far down on the list of the people she's aping.

This.

I'd probably like her if she ever decided to just stick to being Lady Gaga...

you're right, i've never heard of her ever writing/producing a song for herself or anyone else. i mean, it's not like most of the songs she does are written by her.

lol
unless my sarcasm detector is broken
---

anyways, i'm not a big fan of her. In fact, i'm not even a fan of Madonna or any other one who's walked him her steps. I wasn't turned on to Gaga's music until I saw her play piano on American Idol and was totally eek in the face. I began rethinking my prejudice on pop artists because of her.

The fact of the matter is that Prince and Gaga are both genuine artists. They love going against status quo. Both eccentric characters. Thy have that shock- factor in the bag. And they're sex fanatics. Anddddd they are both dancers.

do i really have to do all the comparing myself?!

not the fairest to say
if everyone can sing (and most people cant, they dont have the power or anatomy within their voice to hold a note, thats why its called a talent)
unless you just class any vocal noise ans singing, why cant everyone play the guitar, just picking it up and randomly pluck at it and your carlos santana
(seeing as thats what people try to do when they try and sing, usually not hitting notes they hope to)

why? none of the people I mentioned ever stuck to one thing, and they've all put forth various personae to great benefit. why should Lady GaGa just stick to being Lady GaGa?

thank god for Lady GaGa, I say. yeah, she may be derivative of a slew of folks who've done similar things in the past, but at least there's someone out there carrying that forward with some personality and some great, fun, catchy dance pop and isn't afraid to potentially make an ass out of themselves because of the way they dress or perform.

I think that's why she's so popular. People have been starved for this kind of act since about the early 90's when everyone had to start acting so "real" and "sincere" and serious all the time at the expense of personality and flair and fun.

I didn't say stick to one thing, I said stick to being herself (aka original). Prince, Bowie, Madonna etc what they did was uniquely and originally theirs (except maybe Madge's Marilyn phase) - I can think of about 5 artists straight away that have done everything Gaga's doing already.

Plus, her songs don't match her image. I see her and expect these out of this world techno type tunes and instead hear what sounds like Timbaland left overs.

let's get two things straight.
1. Lady Gaga doesn't have a penis.

2. Lady GaGa is influenced by many 80s artists but still retains a certain level of orginionality.

Funny, because I have seen/heard plenty of people say the same things about Prince, Bowie, Madonna, etc. Usually people who were older in those artists heyday. The same way people who are fans of Prince/Bowie/Madonna/etc. are talking about Lady GaGa.

Happens every generation, but the timeline of who's already done it all before gets slid forward.

am I exaggerating to make my point....sure...I am...but I think my point stands. Is Prince the greatest vocalist in the world. The answer is "by all mean's no". But he IS able to combine it with his many other talents. THat Old English broad on Britian's Got talent can sing her ass off...but U know...no offense to her...it's all she got. The world said buh bye.

I can also relate it my disdain for elvis. The man NEVER wrote a song his whole goddamn life. If Amy "crackhead" Winehouse can write a goddamn song....can't elvis write one.....r at least have the conficence to bring summin to the table. He stole and never went knowwhere with it, demonstrating a leack of a bitlity in learning. The Beatles stole left and right early in their careeer(shit, their WHOLE career)...but U know what....they grew and took it someplace...places it hadn't been before.

I'm not all about Lady Gaga, but the broad can sing...she can play piano...and has a GREAT hold on her image and presentation....best of all...she can write a goddamn song. Even britany spears worte a couple of goddamn songs.

My point is...if all U wanna bring tot he table is singing....be a damn background singer and be happy with it. My neighbor 2 doors down can sing her ass off....do she need a record deal...NO.

I think 2 short said it best...."I'd give U a singer and woudn't give U a joint....singers and shit and now I made my point."
