I actually quite like Lady Gaga.

She's definitely a talented girl. Her live performances prove that beyond doubt.

She's also very adept at working the media and keeping in the limelight. Katy Perry was quoted as saying that Gaga uses a strap-on of some sort to heighten the hermaphrodite rumours, in the sort of way Prince used to poke fun at his own persona I guess.

And let's be honest, if there was something there, most of us would just push it to the side and get the job done anyway..... eek lol

I can see certain similarities between both artists, but Gaga will never have stories about her being a graverobber, or controlling monkeys with the power of her mind, so she's not quite in the Prince category yet in that respect.

Talent wise? We all know no one touches Prince there anyway..... razz
So look into the mirror, do u recognise some1? Is it who u always hoped u would become, when u were young?

and Bowie. and Madonna. and Debbie Harry. and Grace Jones... the list goes on and on. Prince actually comes pretty far down on the list of the people she's aping.

nod She reminds me of Gwen Steffani too, and she has a lot of 80's influences, I like her, at least she's trying to do something different!

id say her live performancees always sound dodgy, her voice never sounds as constrato as it does on the CD, might be running it through a machine

oh hell no Prince Has More Style, Sex Appeal, And Everything lady Gaga cant even sing.....and rumour on the street is she has a penis...idk i think thats bs but u tell me

Lady Gaga has style, sex appeal, and a great strong vocal. This isn't a thread about whose better than the other.

I've just been thinking for a while on how similair they are.. I mean like Prince she doesn't cut loose till she's on the stage. They both have a mysterious figure.

They both are pop but with a rock n roll back bone. Gaga not so much funk as Prince though is.

And who knows, Gaga might turn religious and boring one day in her late future. People wouldn't of dared predicted that of Prince back in the day.

I don't think this thread is stupid at all. Lady Gaga has said that Prince is one of her idols where music and fashion are concerned, so I can see where the OP is coming from with this thread. They are similar in that they wanted to shock people early in their career. We know it was authentic with Prince, as with Gaga, who knows. I personally think she's genuinely out there, so I'll give her the benefit of the doubt. Besides, everyone is the same in music, I'm glad someone is doing something interesting. Plus, I like Lady Gaga too. Her music is fun just like Prince's music is fun. I can hear some of Prince's influence in her music, primarily in the synths. Lady Gaga's cool in my book and it takes a LOT for me to like someone new these days.

I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

She didn't run her voice through a machine. But her producers most certainly did.
But unfortunately that is currently as compulsory as compression these days if u want a pop release, so I certainly don't hold it against her.
She has undeniable artistry. & I guess it's a smart move 2make a record that sounds like it fits in with such a wild persona. At least that way some more individuality gets to penetrate pop culture.
Who knows, it might pave the way for the new generation of Prince types to dominate the music world, rather than the derivative nonsense we have suffered so far this decade.

Who else in contemporary pop would have the balls to pull off such an eccentric performance?

I get exactly what you are saying, though I mostly disagree.
Personally I think she can sing. She is certainly not the greatest, but she is expressive & is more than capable of delivering a song.
Also, a technically perfect vocal is a fractionally small element to deserving a record deal. It is the entertainment industry, & entertain is exactly what she does! She is a good pop songwriter, & an engaging performer with a strong sense of style. If this weren't true that she doesn't deserve a deal based on her vocal ability, Prince probably wouldn't have made it past the Dirty Mind period, as his live vocals were far from perfect.

The point I was making about it being commonplace for vocals to be processed isn't a reflection of the singer. As a producer myself, I know that it is almost compulsory (in most musical genres) to process & "clean up" vocals this way. Even if the vocalist is capable. (it came into practice to make those that can't sing, sound good... but has since been used across the board to make everything sound much more uniform & polished)
It's like in print media, where images are almost always airbrushed & retouched... even if the subject of the image is naturally beautiful.

I personally find it sad that it is going this way, but it's not the fault of the artists... more that of the "system" & consumer demand.

I believe that Gaga deserves to be where she is, & as I have said, I feel it fortunate that she has come along. Love her or hate her, she serves to break up the mediocrity that dominates. I am optimistic about what we may see in music over the coming years.

well i think the entertainment comes from the vocals more nina simone didnt dance much or dress crezeh but the entertainment was 100%
i think gaga can sing too, its just embarrassing when she sounds pretty much nothing like she does on CD
but amy winehouse suprises you cos she sounds better live smile
