To all of you still purchasing albums from retail suppliers...

...you're feeding a dead industry (not DYING mind you...DEAD)...and your beloved artists are well into debt by this point. The pennies they get out of your $10 dont even make it to their pockets. Not saying your love for them is wrong, just saying they're all gonna need new jobs soon enough regardless lol wink

i'll be back to fight you about this later

(oh..and yes i am selling my CD independently through online retail outlets, but i get to keep 70% of profits and dont have to pay mechanical fees out of said cut. ) cool

Well, I always wanted to know what is the "business model" of those retail suppliers, what is their relation with the artists/label (the industry), what goes to who ...blabla ?

I do have to admit I have been going to this Russian site where the albums are 1.50 and the singles are .09 a song.

UNLESS it is a album I really want and a artist I love to support..I am going to listen to the songs and pick and choose the ones that sound good because albums these days are too much to buy filler.

Plus THIS WAY the artist still can be supported by me..even if I only gave them .09 nod

Well, 99.9% of the music that I buy from the record store are either greatest hits CD packages by old artists or used vinyl and these artists already made all the money they were going to make back when the songs were new. My one little purchase isn't going to pull them out of debt even if they got 100% of the $10.

That's because you're on a site where a lot of people agree that the record industry is sinking and I for one want to see the labels go broke because they deserve it for all the bullshit they've promoted for the last 15 years. evillol

By the way, you were smart to use the internet to sell your music. Thank God for the internet these days because it's going to be the only way we will ever get a style change because of label's and radio's picks and chooses of who gets signed and who gets airplay. At least, with the internet, artists of every genre will get a fair chance once radio and labels completely fall and the shit that it has promoted for the last 15 years gets a chance to lose it's popularity with the public.

I want a physical copy, not a digital one. I'll stick to retail. Artists make more money on tour anyway, and everyone knows that.

I understand what you're saying but I still love physical discs if I can get them (and they are still being made). I've been a lot more careful with what I buy, mostly only buying new releases from artists I love and in some cases being careful about that (haven't bought the latest releases from Elvis Costello or Neil Young).

I may own a 80's related website, but I also am a recoridng artist and I keep 70% of my sales as well. Only dealing with 1 person. My music is on iTunes, Amazon, and hundreds of other digital sites. Just google me smile

~Bylli Crayone

My music is very 80s influenced (Freestyle, Club, Trance, etc)

Get my album "NOT A TYPO" on CD and/or Digital... go here for both options.
Listen to the songs, write a review, etc

Even knowing that the retail suppliers are "dead" I still buy cd's/record's. I don't like downloading. One of the main reason being is cd's/record's sound better (if mixed with love and care.) I also like the booklets. I do own an Ipod because it was given to me but I only put songs on there that I already own. When it gets to the point I have no way to buy cd's/records, then I'll figure out what to do, lol. Artist make there money from tours and merch.

For known artists with a track record (and a well established fan base) the direct-to-retailer model works perfectly.
That's as long as the "retailer" is either Wal-Mart/Starbucks/Target.
For those artists, it's far from being dead.

Wal-Mart: The Eagles-Journey-Garth Brooks-AC/DC
Starbucks: Ray Charles-Herbie Hancock-Paul McCartney
Target: Prince

Not sure about the specifics of each deal but in general the act will end up with around $4-$5 a disc immediately instead of around $1.50 eventually (maybe).
