The Spinners are one of my favorite male groups. Philippe was just the man and his voice could take any song to the next level. I only own this box set by them though and it's just excellent:
The Chrome Collection (2003) Check me out and add me on:

These cats need to be in the Rock Hall. The Rock Hall is short on R&B groups who peaked in the 70s. Only the O'Jays and the J5. PRINCE: Always and Forever

What happened was when they left Motown and signed with Atlantic and got with the Philly squad Thom, Linda & Bobby the whole sound changed and they were on fire

The producer Thom Bell won't tell us if it is a female He has hinted that it's just "studio tricks" that he used to make the guy sound like a lady, but I think he's playing games with us,lol.

The Chrome Collection (2003) I have that box set too! It's excellent! My only complaint is that it doesn't include the full-length version of "The Rubberband Man".

I LOVE THE SPINNERS!! I remember hearing "The Rubberband Man" for the 1st time, I fell in love. Their performance on "The Midnight Special" of that song is the biz!!!! They have so many great songs, "Sadie, One Of A Kind "Love Affair), Living A Litte, Laughing A Little", the list goes on. So happy I saw them in concert years ago. Had a couple original members, it was awesome!!!! U can cut off all my fins - But 2 your ways I will not bend
I'll die before I let U tell me how 2 swim And I'll come back again as a dolphin

I know the lead singer died a year or so ago but I always thought that for the Spinners had the distinction of for the most part staying in tact as a group and not "spinning off" into other Spinners groups.

I remember reading about the vocals of Henry Fambrough being sped up to sound like a female voice. Barbara Ingram is a credited vocalist on this tune also. yeah they do, and they really should be in the RRHOF. But like soooo many others , they won't get in until they run out of undeserving people to be inducted. Lady Cab Driver is one of the greatest songs ever!
