I received my copy of Angels & vampires last week and I have to say his singing and songwriting is as strong as ever. The production sounds like a live recorging or something recorded with older analog techology, but the music is great. Although I have to admit that 40 songs is too much to absorb. The same thing wiht Prince lately. I prefer 9 songs from Maxwell for example.

Why the name change to Sananda?

Is this an religous thing? Is he a buddhist or something?

I was thinking the same thing when originally heard he changed the name.

Sananda sounds like Ananda---the buddha's long time assistant and friend.

Maytraya sounds like Maitreya is the title of the next Buddha who buddhist believe will be born in the very distant future when Buddhism's teachings have become lost to time. (essentiall the next guy to discover the 'truth' and teach it).

So his name is almost like a Marilyn Manson mashup but of two very Buddhist themes.

I just saw the video to Billy Don't fall, was that about one of his gay friends dying of AIDS who used to be a boxer like TTD. Don't get the way he treats his girl and spends more time with Billy, even after he pushes Billy in the water after he tries to kiss him. Either way its a powerful song with a courageous message for the time (1989). And you have to admit the quality of the vocals and songwriting in Let Her Down surpasses anything Prince has done (Sorry, but the truth hurts).
He's like a nicer Prince if you could say hes like Prince, hes got a bit more soul and maturity than the early Prince material hes supposed to be imitating
So what are u going 2 do? R u just gonna sit there and watch? I'm not gonna stop until the war is over. Its gonna take a long time

I don't understand this type of logic. U would rather have 9 songs than 40?

You know, I've always viewed Terrence Trent Darby as a Prince clone of sorts, not really giving much credit to him as an individual artist.

This is a shame cause I never viewed Prince as a Hendrix/Stevie wonder clone.

Anyways, I've been listening to some of Terrence's music post name-change to Sananda Maitreya (something I found eye-rollingly Prince-like at the time), but unlike Prince who's namechange ended up being some very strange episode in a career that could have done without it, Sananda's name change and music took a radical change for the better in my opinion.

His music is vibrant, smart, whimsical, and oh-so soulful in places. I regret not having payed more attention to him when he started with the new Sananda Maitreya material.

The following song is reminiscent of some of the best of old soul classics, a little dash of biker rock, and of course, a Prince-like anthemic vibe to it. But its not just simple imitation here--there's something unique and vibrant about it.

Me likes.

One of the best gigs I saw was This man in 1996 promoting the Vibrator album of which Holding on to you was the lead single.

Basically the album neither fish nor flesh was TTD's ATWIAD unfortunately Terence had neither the fan base or ultimately the talent to become a major selling artist after that release unlike Prince

I think TTD wanted to emulate Prince as far as innovation was concerned but he didn't quite have the musical chops to pull it off.

Respect to him for trying to walk a different path from your typical pop star though.
What you don't remember never happened

Zannaloaf

His Wildcard CD kicked ass too- it's unfortunate Sony fucked him over on that one.

Neither Fish Nor Flesh is one of the most underrated albums ever i think.

Totally agree. I loved it when it came out and still listen to it.

I definitely think Sananda is an underrated artist. I have all of his albums up through Wild Cards. I need to get the more recent stuff.
