And I totally agree about the janet. video. I brought this up recently and no one seems to remember it. I used to watch it all the time. I thought for sure the color version of that song was on another compilation somewhere though.

Either way, I can't believe she had that one put on DVD.

I remember seeing an 1814 CD that had the RN DVD in it too for about $20. Had to be 2001 or 2002 that I saw that. Never did pick it up. I don't know if the RN1814 mini movie is on DVD or not (not the RN Compilation...I have that on DVD), but that would have been a great set to get. I've never seen it since.

Prince and the Revolution Live

Any Prince stuff that was on VHS before could stand on DVD. Fans would buy it.

I finally found a great old comedy on DVD recently, Top Secret with a very young Val Kilmer. Such a funny movie. It was in the vein of Airplane and Naked Gun. I held onto a VHS I had for years until I finally found the DVD.

The color version is on DVD... It's on the ALL FOR YOU dvd Edition
I just pulled it out to make sure..

I've been waiting for it eversince some indie company bought its rights back in 2006 to be remastered(with outtakes and a reunion interview with Ms.Jones & the filmmaker).

I SOOOOO want the Criterion Collection to release this,,,,their packaging has always been fantastic, and its right up their alley.

Does Criterion Collection work with music video concerts like this? There is a Hollywood video in Ann Arbor that might carry all the Critenion Collection DVDs...I don't recognize most of them, though!

I have the "from janet. to Damita jo" DVD.

RN1814 is on DVD somewhere, because I've seen it. I posted it earlier in this thread. Go take a peek.

As far as the "Feel It Boy", it's unlikely she'll ever promote that song again. Beenie Man is a raging homophobe, and Janet wasn't quite clear on that when she did the song. He's constantly talking about how horrible homosexuals are, and of course Janet is like Ms. Gay Icon Forever.

A gay rights group in Britain wanted to boycott the single. They said Beenie Man had a history of being a homophobe in his music. Fast forward to just a few years ago, and Janet said, "If I had known that (he was associated with homophobia), I would not have worked with him. It's shocking to me. We're on the same label, so I should have known. But at the same time, I wish someone from the company would have told me, knowing how... I feel about the gay community."

I don't really know how much control Janet has over the video and putting it on a DVD anyway. I suppose she COULD put it on a disk if she asked for permission. But the bridge between the two of them has been burned, so who knows if either will ever budge on it. It's still out there of course, as is the song.

"Scream" is an MJ thing moreso than a Janet thing, despite it being a duet. Weird about "24 Play" but it is on the Design of a Decade DVD I believe. She should have did what George Michael did, and release a very comprehensive set of music and DVD, with twentyfive. It was a great set of videos covering everything, and 3 disks of hits, each divided into types of songs. (He did a similar grouping on Ladies and Gentleman.)

She promised, on Larry King last year, that the janet. tour and RN tour would be released on DVD. Shelves sure are empty right now though.

I think this is a little over the top. I'm a fan of dancehall music, and although Beenie Man is not one of my favorite artists, it's not really fair for you to single him out as a "raging homophobe", when the whole of the Jamaican culture is very homophobic. It's wrong to single out dancehall music for being homophobic, and it's even more wrong to single out any individual artist for a problem that is a part of an entire culture and country. I've never personally heard Beenie Man say anything about homosexuals although I don't doubt that he has, but there are many that have said a lot worse.

As for the gay rights group, was that Peter Tatchell's lot? That guy is a complete and utter douchebag and I actually feel his "efforts" hurt the gay community more than he could ever realise by painting every gay person as being uber-sensitive crybabies who cause a fuss over the smallest of incidents.

Anyway, back on topic. Despite being a huge fan I have yet to purchase any Janet DVD's. I need to. I don't even have a VHS player any more so I can't watch my "Control", "Rhythm Nation" and "janet" VHS's that I own.

I may get the "from janet to damita jo" as my first Janet DVD.

Beenie Man has lost quite a few concert dates here in NYC and abroad for his lyrics about gays and women ...

Beenie Man apologizes for hurtful lyrics

Published: Aug. 4, 2004 at 2:56 PM
LONDON, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- Jamaican reggae artist Beenie Man, known for lyrics inciting violence against gays and women, apologized for his music, saying he meant no harm.
Beenie Man, whose real name is Anthony Moses Davis, issued the apology in a statement Tuesday through his record company, Virgin Records, Britain's Guardian reported Wednesday.

"It has come to my attention that certain lyrics and recordings I have made in the past may have caused distress and outrage among people whose identities and lifestyles are different from my own," the statement said.

"While my lyrics are very personal, I do not write them with the intent of purposefully hurting or maligning others, and I offer my sincerest apologies to those who might have been offended, threatened or hurt by my songs," he said.

Critics, especially the British gay rights group OutRage, have worked to have Beenie Man's concerts canceled throughout Britain and Europe because of the hate music.

Peter Tatchell of OutRage rejected the artist's apology, saying the words were damage control for the musician's upcoming British promotional tour for his new album, due out Aug. 16.

Beenie Man has said in his music that lesbians should be lynched, he'd like to cut gay men's throats, and rid Jamacia of homosexual. His culture's homophobia is no excuse for HIM to be a big mouth piece in the music industry and promoting homophobia. There's a responsibility artists have while still maintaining their right to speak their mind and express themselves.

No one indicted dancehall music. Beenie Man was indicted. If you've not heard Beenie Man say anything about homosexuals, go listen again. Go even check out his wikipedia page. There are specific examples of a few songs where he talks about murdering homosexuals. He's a disgrace. And yes, he is a raging homophobe in his music, and outside of his music. He's flat out said in interviews that he doesn't see homosexuality as normal, it's not wholesome, and he hates the very idea of homosexuality.

His apology is thinner than the air atop Mt. Fuji. He never specifically cites what he's apologizing for, and remains very vague and thin in his words. I also think it was a publicity stunt on his part to garner some sympathy, attention, and a shot in his now-ridiculously low-reaching career.

I don't buy his apology anymore than I'd buy a bridge from a homeless guy. Dollars to donuts he'll pop up again with homophobic lyrics, either directly or indirectly, in his music.

I felt embarrassed to take the DVD player out of the place that left since it sort of came with the place, so I ended up buying a cheap DVD player. It was a name brand and maybe under $30 but it I was surprised to see it played PAL DVDs. So I put in a Pet Shop Boys Cd single. Not only does it play, it looks almost like Blu Ray!

It's still more than any other dancehall artist has done as far as taking a reponsibility for the homophobia that exists in Jamaica. Do you listen to any dancehall music? Because if Beenie Man's homophobia is the reason that you don't listen to his music, then you must not listen to any dancehall music because they ALL talk like that. I'm not making excuses for the guy, but like I said - you can't single him out for something that EVERY artist in his genre of music says.

You're missing the point. What I'm saying is that you are making it seem like Beenie Man's homophobia is a personal, individual issue. You just said it yourself - you single him out because he endorses the murder of homosexuals. I'm telling you that every single artist in his genre of music does. Not only that, damn near every single straight Jamaican man does - and I should know, I live in an area full of Jamaican immigrants.

I'm saying it's unfair for you to single out Beenie Man for that. In fact, he's probably the last person that should be singled out for it because the homophobic things that he has said are NOTHING compared to the things that the vast majority of artists in his genre of music say, and it's the same things that the regular young Jamaican male on the street says. It's so intrinsically part of their culture that he doesn't know any better. Of course that doesn't make it right. But even just stating the fact "Beenie Man is a homophobic dancehall artist" is completely redundant if you know anything about Jamaican culture.

I think it's just your choice of wording and phrasing that could be miscontrued by anyone that doesn't know anything about dancehall music. Like Beenie Man is some sort of minority for saying homophobic things or he's the only one that does it.

I'm not in any way trying to defend the guy for what he's said - but if all you ever heard when you were growing up was "homosexuality is wrong" - from your parents, your peers, your teachers, your friends, the artists you looked up to, the TV shows you watched - you would just grow up accepting that, as if it were a fact and it would be hard for you to be able to let go of that. These guys don't think they're doing anything wrong when they make homophobic remarks. It's all they know and they don't question it. Much like most of the Western world believes in make-believe gods and bullshit religions and never questions it - it's been intrinsically drilled into them since before they could think for themselves and thus they are completely unable to let go of it. I know smart, logical, intelligent, people who know there is no god, and yet every now and then they catch themselves saying a prayer or talking to some god and have to stop themselves - no matter what they know and learn, on some level they're conditioned into the bullshit religion system. It's not their fault - it's the fault of the irreponsible society around them that taught them these things as facts. And that's how it is in Jamaica with homophobia. Personally, I find religion just as offensive as homophobia, but depending on the society, you can't blame the religious folk for being that way. They don't know any better.

If you think Beenie Man (and most dancehall artists) actually want to go out and cause physical damage to gay people, you're wrong. my cousin is a very famous dancehall artist and truth be told, it's a strong possibility that he's said something homophobic before in his lyrics too. but if you actually ask him, "do you actually have anything against gay people, are you homophobic?" - he'd say "of course not".

Anyway, I've gone on a bit of a rant here, but I hope you can understand what I'm saying. If not, that's OK. I'm not gay myself, but I'm certainly not homophobic as I have gay friends and family members, and I'm a very vocal supporter of the right for gay marriage etc (hell when the prop 8 argument was the hot topic of conversation, i had people think I was gay purely because I was arguing for their rights so hard lol as if it affected me personally), so I hope nothing I have written will get construed as being homophobic or being a sympathizer for homophobes. Just trying to shed some light on the ways of the world as I understand them. smile

Peace...
