I only said that one 'cause 2 all the diehard EWF fans that's one of the three least liked albums in their catalouge and the poster wanted somewhere to start.. But you know as I think about it, "Heritage" would make number 4 but there were some songs on it that I liked so I'll try "Powerlight" again....

I would say you you can't go wrong with All N All.

Next choice would be:

That's the Way of the World

Finally - Spirit - is a must have for the song "On Your Face"

We all want the stuff that's found in our wildest dreams.

I love 'Touch The World' boxed This album and 'Raise' are their best 80s albums, imo.

I wouldn't avoid "Powerlight", but I would definitely stay away from "Electric Universe". The rest are good...especially from "Open Our Eyes" to "Raise". Any of those (well, maybe not Faces) is a good place to start. If you want t good compilation to start off, I recommend

3. I Think About Lovin' You Listen
4. Interlude [#] - Larry Dunn, Earth, Wind & Fire Listen
5. Time Is on Your Side Listen
6. Where Have All the Flowers Gone Listen
7. Power Listen
8. Keep Your Head to the Sky Listen
9. Evil Listen
10. Mighty Mighty Listen
11. Feelin' Blue Listen
12. Hey Girl (Interlude) [#] - Earth, Wind & Fire, Andrew Woolfolk Listen
13. Open Our Eyes Listen
14. Shining Star [Alternate Version][#] Listen
15. Happy Feelin' Listen
16. Reasons Listen
17. Shining Star Listen
18. That's the Way of the World Listen

Disc: 2
1. Kalimba Story/Sing a Message to You [Live][#] Listen
2. Head to the Sky/Devotion [Live][#] Listen
3. Sun Goddess [Live] - Earth, Wind & Fire, Earth, Wind & Fire Listen

16. Be Ever Wonderful Listen
17. Beijo (Interlude) Listen
18. Got to Get You into My Life Listen

Disc: 3
1. September Listen
2. Boogie Wonderland - Earth, Wind & Fire, The Emotions Listen
3. After the Love Has Gone Listen
4. In the Stone Listen
5. Dirty (Interlude) [#] - Earth, Wind & Fire, Johnny Graham, Junior Wells Listen
6. Let Me Talk Listen
7. And Love Goes On Listen
8. Pride Listen
9. Demo [#] - Earth, Wind & Fire, Barry Mann, Maurice White Listen
10. Let's Groove Listen
11. Wanna Be With You Listen
12. Little Girl (Interlude) [#]
13. Night Dreamin' [#] Listen
14. Fall in Love With Me Listen
15. Magnetic Listen
16. System of Survival Listen
17. Thinking of You Listen
18. Gotta Find Out Listen
19. That's the Way of the World [Live] Listen

To me, this compilation gives you a good overview of their albums and the tracks actually flow as if this is a complete album. Sure, a lot of "key" songs are not included (On Your Face, Love Music, etc.). I don't really view this album as a "hits" compilation, but as an intro to their music.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Powerlight is a GOOD album. for me certainly better than anything that came after at least until "The Promise"

of course I wouldn't chose it as a starting point to explore their music, but nevertheless...

as others already stated, get "Eternal Dance" and go on from there... then you can work yourself through their album catalouge depending on the songs and time periods you like most
Vanglorious... this is protected by the red, the black, and the green. With a key... sissy!

"The Eternal Dance" was my true introduction to EWF. Before I got that, I had a few of their albums, but wasn't that familiar with their body of work. After I got this, it gave me a good over view and I started getting the other albums I didn't have.

I think 'Powerlight' has some good moments, but it's probably their weakest 80s album.Alot of it feels like they're just going through the motions. It's not nearly as consistent as the album that came before it ('Raise'),nor is it as edgy and adventurous as the album that came after it ('Electric Universe').

Having said that,I still think the two singles are great: "Fall In Love With Me" and "Side By Side".

I somewhat dig their official-released "Magnetic"-video from Electric Universe, but other than that i can't really get into that groove unfortunately.
There is something monotonous in the chorus which i don't find exciting. I feel the vibe more with "Powerlight", especially the tracks i posted.

I'm one of the few EW&F fans who actually likes 'Electric Universe' lol That album has a really bad reputation, criticized by almost everyone. Many fans were shocked when they first heard it.The horns were gone, replaced by a cold, electronic sound created with synths and drum machines.I guess it was hard for many fans to accept, but I totally understand why Maurice went in this direction. The previous album ('Powerlight') features elements of their "old" sound, but there was a sense that EW&F was sounding outdated and behind the times.Remember, this was the early 80s,a time when other funk bands like Cameo and the Bar Kays were also changing their sound, experimenting with synth-heavy punk funk and even New Wave styles.I think Maurice felt that EW&F had to do the same.

The album is far from perfect but I like half of the songs: "Magnetic","Touch","Could It Be Right" and "We're Living In Our Own Time".The remaining songs are okay.

Yeah, that was indeed an understandable move of Maurice. I'm gonna give the album a recheck cool

"Could It Be Right" is one of their best ballads....it's the same vein as "After The Love Is Gone".A very good song music I think it woulda been a huge pop/adult contemporary hit if released as a single.
