Its a tie for me between Marvin Gaye or Donny Hathaway.

There are soooo many to chose from, but for my money, it would probably boil down to James Brown, Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, Ray Charles, or Aretha Franklin. But again, I could list 1 or 2 dozen great soul singers without breaking a sweat. Lady Cab Driver is one of the greatest songs ever!

There's just too fucking many great soul singers. Even though Marvin is my favorite artist, there's like 50 others who are as great! That's why I love soul music, all the artists listed are iconic.

This is truly an interesting question. Of course, we all have our favorites.
Another question might be, who would the singers of that era select as the best? James Brown said in his first autobiography that if Willie John were white, he would have been as big as Elvis! Sam Moore of Sam and Dave talked about the phenomenal vocal ability of Little Willie John. Joe Texx once said that Willie John was the great singer he'd ever heard. There are many stories about Willie John and Jackie Wilson performing on the same show ... Little Willie John probably had more influence on the singers in his era than any other singer of his time. I wanna add Paul Williams (of the Tempts), Chuck Jackson and Kim Weston to the growing thread ...and give a shout out to Timmy84

Enjoy! Mad Props! James Carr is one of the most underrated and forgotten Soul singers. Even though he's never reached the fame as Otis Redding, William Bell, Solomon Burke, James Brown and later Marvin Gaye, I think Carr must be on the top of the list.

Believe it or not, but he's on my top list ... and if you listen to this tune right here, there's no denying that Richard is one of the greatest Soul singers ...
Sam's brother L.C. ... The great O.V. Wright ... He should be on the top list as well ... Bottom line, there are/were so many great Soul singers .. some more famous, some less ...

Gotta bring the ladies:
I posted this early on its own thread (and on another Betty Wright thread) but this girl needs to be included indefinitely! She, Patti & Minnie predated Deniece/Rachelle/Mariah/Christina, etc. [Edited 8/14/09 15:13pm] [Edited 8/14/09 15:16pm]

I have to agree too about Little Willie John. Marvin was influenced by him, in fact, I hear Little Willie in some of Marvin's early '60s records more so than I heard Sam Cooke. And that's for real.
