He wasn't a Johnny Mae oops I mean Johnny Gill type of singer or a Luther but he showcased his voice well in his songs. He never tried anything vocally that was out of his element. And considering he felt the heat from Prince at least he didn't try to bust out in a falsetto. [Edited 8/13/09 9:29am] He did display a nice falsetto on his debut album, on the song 'Dream Maker'. and I think he pulled it off pretty well. I haven't heard "Dream Maker" in years. I'll check it out again. The good thing is he didn't it as a "reaction" to Prince. FWiW ...My mom played organ in the church and sang. She surely did not understand my music but she tolerated it. One day I was playing Rick James on the cassette tape in the car and she remarked. "He has a very nice powerful tone. I like his voice. Who is this?"
That was high praise from Mom.

scriptgirl said: okay, what is vibrato and isn't chest voice your lower register, then?
Vibrato just means your voice is vibrating, the pitch is actually slightl changing up and down slightly in a fastm oscillation manner. Chest voice tends to be a little bit lower than the so-called head voice, but it's perfectly possible to sing at the very same pitch with both. Using your chest for pushing more air usually also means it's harder to hit the correct notes, which is why a lot of people sort of just "belt it" out and indeed use vibrato to make up for certain shortcomings in that area. Both have their purposes, it's just that the average vocal trainers do not consider the head voice even "proper singing" sometimes. Well, what the hell do they know.

That's why his main focus was just on making the good music in the background. He really allowed Teena to dominate the ballad duets they did together.

Fire and Desire Teardrops Hollywood When Love Is Gone Dream Maker Island Lady all of these songs display his vocal range. But I will agree, that it can be easy to 'ignore' his vocal ability because his arrangements were so 'active', so your ear could be drawn away. [Edited 8/13/09 18:08pm] Oh, and I forgot Ebony Eyes with Smokey. It just came on. Lady Cab Driver is one of the greatest songs ever!

Well, he outsings Smokey Robinson (one hell of a great singer himself) on "Ebony Eyes".
I'd say he was pretty damn great. Not among the elite, but still great.
