Do music videos matter? I may just be out of the loop because I don't watch much tv or have cable, but I am wondering how significant music videos are these days for artists to promote their music. Are most artists still making them, and who is the audience? Do folks over say, 22, watch them? I'm also wondering, do music videos appeal to you or impact your enjoyment of a song? [Edited 8/6/09 15:46pm] I don't watch much TV either.. But yes, when a video is well made, with a good story behind, good settings and places, and a good choreography, it can be appealing to me... But nowadays, however, YouTube and other streaming channels killed the euphory I used to have when I was watching TV in my teenage years, waiting for my favourite-video-of-the-moment to be played (though I'm kind of "happy" that Prince music is banned, it makes me feel I'm one of the "happy few" actually accessing his music and sincerely enjoying it)... The fact that music videos are so easy to find and watch is a good and bad thing : Just like downloading music "illegally", they are now available to anybody, anytime, but at the same time they dont have much appeal (artistically or musically) like they used to have, and they dont have much value now, compared to, say, 10 years ago... If U add the fact that the "hip hop concept" of music video (half-naked wom... er, sorry, bitches dancing around, showing off, money) is slowly but surely infest EVERY style of music (except maybe "indie" music)... well... U know... [b] "Can you tell me why those rappers, who appear to have all the women, the cars and the money they want, always look angry in their music videos" (The Boondocks)[/] ... So true Everybody is somebody, but nobody wants to be themselves.

I always enjoyed watching music videos back in their early days but they had absolutely no impact on whether or not I liked the song. I was around long before music videos and when they became popular, they were just something extra. People either liked or disliked the song already long before the music video even came out (IF the video even came out at all...a lot of stuff didn't), Andy is a four letter word.

YouTube has become the new MTV,which is why I think Prince is silly for not taking advantage of the promotional possibilities. The video networks rarely show music videos these days,so Youtube is where the fans go to see this stuff.

Yeah.... I just hate prince for not allowing the fans to enjoy his music on youtube, music is created to be shared with others, its ridiculous and horrible that nearly all the videos of prince on youtube have no audio...Pathetic. Yeah,it's ridiculous, isn't it? Fortunately, most recording artists don't share that same view. Some of these artists even have their own Youtube channel.

Yeah ,its ridiculous, I mean, Most People would go and buy a record if they listened to it on youtube, youtube is a great way of exploring new music and new artists from all different cultures, saying that prince doesn’t do this because he is "so protective of his music" is a pathetic lame excuse…all artists are letting their fans enjoying their music on youtube… Last time I checked, wanted listen to “diamonds and pearls” and to see the music video, I found no audio, a video with no sound….Pathetic [Edited 8/10/09 5:01am] MICHAEL JACKSON

Yeah, in a lot of ways, Prince is stuck in 1999, and this is one of them. If he considered all of the 'newbies' who don't know a thing about him, who might buy some albums after they saw some of his stuff on youtube, he might change his mind. He's just a 'cash whore' nowadays, I understand he wants to be compensated for his work, but it seems like he wants to squeeze every penny out of everything with his name on it. I know we're in a recession, but damn P. Lady Cab Driver is one of the greatest songs ever!

No. At least not anymore, I just feel a strong backlash coming for it very soon. I rather watch a performance then a video and it doesn't have to be a vegas show with a billion back up dancers.

I don't think music videos matter i have no time for them. I listen to music when im out alot and you can't walk down the street watching a music video. IMO the only music vid that mattered was MJ's Thriller.

Prince wants to get paid for his videos. But then again, he never puts them up for sale. Makes a lot of sense doesn't it? Andy is a four letter word.

Prince (The JW) doesn't want anyone to remember him during his Dirty Mind/Controversy era. Those were the days when his sins were THE worst.

Music videos mattered BEFORE the 21st century. And that was BEFORE reality TV shows ran the music videos off of MTV & VH-1.
But these days, recording artists can use YouTube, MySpace, Facebook, & Twitter to promote their songs/videos.
