I'm also incredibly partial to this rendition of Schubert's Ave Maria.

I just remembered how much I loved this song back in the day:

The Downtown Lights by The Blue Nile

(though Annie Lennox cover in the Medusa album is really good, too)

.
Lion -- Go Peter go!!

From the top of my head:

Susan McKeown - Shamrock Green (mesmerizing in its fragility and stillness)

Kate Rusby - The recruited collier (idem)

Van Morrison and The Chieftains - Carrickfergus (for me THE definitive version of this Irish traditional)

Joni Mitchell - Little Green (great vocal phrasing / timing)

REM - Nightswimming (such a great song about nostalgia and loss, happy and sad at the same time)

Van Morrison - In the Garden (spiritual redemption in the form of a song)

The Pogues - Rainy night in soho (those lyrics!)

Teddy Thompson - She thinks I still care (those vocals!)

Lyle Lovett - Ballad of the snow leopard and the Tanquery Cowboy (country 'crooning' at its best, great lyrics also)

Teenage Fanclub - Start Again (2 chord powerpop-perfection, genious in its simplicity)

It´s interesting that quite a few people love Adore. I could never get into that song. The one Prince song that I adored from the first moment I heard it is 5 Women.

Anyways, to post the most beautiful song is an impossible task for me.
"When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."
