Love the Impressions. I think they may rank over the Tempts in the 60s' for me.

The Impressions & Temptations were definitely neck-to-neck. Only thing separating them was the dancing, which the Impressions seldom did.

lol Can't hate him for being honest. The one thing the Impressions had that the Temptations seldom did was writing their own material, well it was mainly Curtis though most of the members did write their own stuff. smile

In a Mayfield booklet I got, he was on he same bill as James Brown and they played before them. After the got through killing, JB said "man, how do y'all do it. We go out there dancin' and sweating and y'all just chill back and sing and the crow goes nuts."

Curtis' falsetto and the harmonies of Curtis, Fred & Sam are the reasons. They were just SMOOTH with it and the audience fed off their vibe. nod

Some folks needed to dance to add on to the excitement, some didn't. Marvin couldn't dance to save his life and yet the crowd went nuts too. lol

I also love the Impressions records with Leroy Hutson and Ralph Johnson on lead. I love them all.

Exactly. Plus he had to have the biggest band so of course when people came to see James, it was "the greatest show on Earth", everything had to be big for James to get ahead. If he had just sung, he would've only been a Sam Cooke/Ray Charles/Little Richard follower, he HAD to amp it up and I'm glad he did. cool

I love the stuff they did with the original quintet lineup with Jerry Butler in the lineup. It's interesting how three of the greatest soul musicians were in one band (Jerry & Curtis at the beginning and then Leroy later on).
