Do U still buy CDs/vinyls? Hello ppl!
I've been wondering how many of U still buy their music on physical support? I do, though I havent bought many new releases so far in 2009 (my last purchase was Maxwells "BLACKsummernight", 'cause I'm a fan and I have all of his CDs)... But I feel like one of the last dinosaurs left, U know my friends making of me like "Wow, dude, why wasting money, when U can get it for free?? R U dat dumb?" ... it makes nonsense to many people, but i love my CDs, cant separate myself from them.. But I still like collecting CDs and a few vinyls of the music I love. I have an iPod, but at home, I'd rather play my music through a good audio system, bith good vibes and a deep bass, not that mp3 shit... So... Do U still buy CDs/vinyls? Why? How often? Whats the opinion of people around you regarding buying music? Besides filesharing, according to U, what are the reasons many people don't buy music anymore? Everybody is somebody, but nobody wants to be themselves.

vinyls?
No I stopped Christmas 88 Why?
Can't help it. I love(d) having them, touching them, reading the booklet, learning the lyrics... I have 1600CDs permanently loaded in megachangers and I'm about to install yet another one. How often?
Very often. I'm even guilty of having several sealed CDs I have no time to listen Whats the opinion of people around you regarding buying music?

You said it. If you can get it for free you won't pay for it. People have gotten lazy to discover new music. They will only listen to what they already know. That ad song they play over and over. The new polytone they've heard 5 seconds of, yet they say "Oh I love this song" when they hear the same snippet again...

Do U still buy CDs/vinyls? Yes. CDs mostly, but once in awhile I'll buy an LP on vinyl.
Why? Having a physical product makes me feel more like I own it. I like the bigger album art, the liner notes, the things you don't get with downloads. Also, when just downloading music, I tend to forget I have it after a week. How often? On average I think I buy one album a week. Whats the opinion of people around you regarding buying music? Honestly, I'm not sure. If I ever talk to friends about music, it's not about in what format they own it, but more about the music itself. Besides filesharing, according to U, what are the reasons many people don't buy music anymore? People don't value music any more. It's not that important to them so why should they pay for it? That's why they settle for cheap quality MP3s rather than buying CDs or records and hearing what the music really should sound like on a proper system.

Do you still buy CDs/vinyls?
CDs yes, vinyls no. Why? I love the booklets and simply knowing that, in a small way, I'm supporting the artists I love How often? Not as often as I should. Mostly when someone comes up with something new or when I start obsessing on an artist who has released several albums and I start collecting them Whats the opinion of people around you regarding buying music? They basically give me the wtf look or just say what you mentioned "Why spend your money if you can get it for free." Besides file sharing, according to you, what are the reasons many people don't buy music anymore? I have no idea I think the fact that most of the people doing mainstream music are really "singles artists" so as long as people are available to buy, I don't know, ONE song via iTunes they won't feel the need to explore the artist's music. idk

Do U still buy CDs/vinyls? Yes to both. I've been buying less and less Cds since I tend to buy older stuff and I already have who knows how many. I've just started buying vinyl, all used and older material.
Why? I do like having the tangiable booklet and the ability to listen without a computer or MP3 player. I don't have a fancy stereo but do listen often to Cds in my car. If I got a new car, it would have to have CD player over a fancy radio/Mp3 holder. How often? Maybe one or two a week average. Sometimes I'll go months without buying music and then suddenly I'll buy a ton! Whats the opinion of people around you regarding buying music? Part of me feels bad for them but I'm mostly angry. It's a large reason why music has gone so done in quality and quantity. Besides filesharing, according to U, what are the reasons many people don't buy music anymore? I agree with sextonseven about people not valuing it anymore. They just don't care. They piss and moan about MTV, but kids still watch it and then go steal music online. It's this causal attitude but having no value for the arts. Quality is a also a big issue. I know I'm older but I just don't get these new kids anymore!

Basically, for the artwork Nowadays (because I spent a lot of time on the computer) I really just buy the CD, rip it to my computer and just keep them there for reference and such. Also, I don't have a CD player other than my laptop so

fuck and yeah
many older releases are only avaialble on vinyl and cds.. I dont dont understand having thousands of songs only on an mp3 player only... I need something tangible [Edited 8/1/09 14:44pm]

Do U still buy CDs/vinyls? Yes. Just cds though. You actually feel like own the album when you buy it. If the album is good in its entirety or over 50% of the album has good songs, then its worthy of buying.
Why? It gets tiring listening to songs on an mp3 player all the time and you can listen to it in your car. Also like I said above you own the album, so its a whole different experience. Its also fun going through the inlays of the album and reading about it. How often? Once in a while. Recently just bought four Michael Jackson albums. That's the most I've bought as of late. Whats the opinion of people around you regarding buying music? If the album has a lot of good songs, then buy it. Otherwise, if you like one or two songs, just get the mp3. Besides filesharing, according to U, what are the reasons many people don't buy music anymore? Because the love for the songs dies away fast, and then it becomes no big deal after awhile. The songs of today that are promoted on mainstream radios don't have that everlasting quality over time. The mainstream radios are not neccesarily promoting all the right and best artists who deserve more airplay time. [Edited 8/1/09 15:15pm]

Yes! In fact, I've been working on cataloging my vinyl collection. My sister has been cleaning out my Granny's house and brought me a big box of 45s, 12" and 78s.
I found this great website that has made this process easier: www.bagsunlimited.com I also just bought a 8-track player on ebay- mine stopped working. My basement has become my music room: I wouldn't be able to display a digital collection. "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. Still buy cds, not vinyl unless its a special edition from an artist i have always collected (mostly the 80's artists i grew up on, and some new) but as for digital downloads they sound like shit compared to both, sorry folks, did this experiment with the new a-ha cd and download that was available a month before (and no it wasnt an MP3 it was a MP4 direct) and the comparison of the sound is drastic, plus cd is a step down from Vinyl so imagine the step down to digital. I will always buy CDs. MP3's don't sound that great to me. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

with sites like Imeem Pandora etc .... the average listener will opt for putting up with ads to listen to playlist they've created. And tha allure is free ... free is 't always good if the artist loses out on presenting their music which should be a listening experience from beginning to end.
The downfall is artist focusing on 2 songs if even to get radio play while everything else is filler. to answer the question I still buy cd's not often last one was Maxwell's. what I need to throw away is the flying saucer cd player which hasn't been used in years. I feel like it's a collectors vintage item

CDs sometimes
never Vinyl anymore (although I still ahve a a very few vinyl albums I need to have transferred to cd) I just purchased my first-ever iTunes music this year. So far I have acquired about 12 titles from there. It is not the same as having the physical media. I like reading the credits, etc, and I love my Sony Walkman/MP3 player. It took me forever to switch from cassette media to cd media. It will be a rainy day in pregatory before I getan iPod, just something about that media that hasn't quite caught my desire yet, sighs Music Royalty in Motion

sextonseven said:[quote]Do U still buy CDs/vinyls? Yes. I still buy CDs but not vinyls since my vinyl player (is that the correct word?) does not work for over a decade plus they are pretty difficult to store and maintain.
Why? Having a physical product makes me feel more like I own it. I like the bigger album art, the liner notes, the things you don't get with downloads. Also, when just downloading music, I tend to forget I have it after a week. Same reasons exactly. Plus I am old fashion I guess. Downloads seem to me too cheap and too replaceable How often? Pretty often although I spend about a year and a half without buying or listening to anything because of health issues (antibiotic reaction caused tinnitus among other things). Now I try to make up for that lost time. Last cds I ordered were only yesterday the new Bats For Lashes plus compilations from The Christians and Shalamar. I only buy online though. Whats the opinion of people around you regarding buying music? They just don't buy anymore. I have friends who think that I am wasting my money and that I should spend my money buying clothes rather. It is not the early 90s anymore I guess when everyone would run to the CD store to buy the new Michael Jackson or the new flavour of the moment. Besides filesharing, according to U, what are the reasons many people don't buy music anymore? People don't value music any more. It's not that important to them so why should they pay for it? That's why they settle for cheap quality MP3s rather than buying CDs or records and hearing what the music really should sound like on a proper system. Totally agreed. Here they are listening only to house/trance and hip-hop/R&B (the current stuff not the classics) as far as foreign music is concerned and those are not the best genres to increase your appetite for music but they are the genres pushed by radio. I have heard also the opinion from a lot of younger people that music in english is not serious. has no quality, lacks in lyrics and it is only for clubbing and nothing else. Of course this shows lack of knowledge in music history (since greek modern music with which it is compared is usually a copy of english and arabic/balkanic music with some greek elements mixed in but it is an accurate description of the music pushed by radio. Also the vast majority of clubs and bars won't play anything with singing lyrics over here. If it is not music only (club music that is) or if there is no rap in it they won't play it with a very few exceptions (Hung Up was the last one I can remember). There is some small 80s revival going on but only through club remixes and not the original versions or artists. Young people here generally consider Boom Boom Pow the new Bohemian Rhapsody. Other than that there are some rock bars which would play classics and (very) few retro clubs and that's it but those do not appeal to the general crowd [Edited 8/2/09 5:56am] [Edited 8/2/09 5:59am]
