Quote from a Delfonics disc I have:

The Delfonics
“Can You Remember,” one of the album’s William Hart/Thom Bell-penned originals, ended up redone by the Jackson 5 on their Motown debut album. The Delfonics had already crossed paths with the pubescent Gary, Indiana, lads prior to their Motown crowning.

“we used to do a lot of shows at the Regal Theater in Chicago, and at the Capitol Theater there,” William Hart recalls. “I remember they didn‘t have a place to change clothes, and we had a big trailer and all. They were opening up the shows for us at that time, the Jackson 5. And they thought that was nice of me, to let them come in and change, I remember Michael saying, ‘Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!’ I told them, ‘Hey, one day I may need you, who knows? I‘ve got a lot of faith in you guys.’”

The connection paid off-the J5 subsequently covered “LA-La” and “Ready Or Not Here I Come (Can‘t Hide From Love)” from the Delfonics songbook as well. “They got on The Ed Sullivan Show, and they asked the Jackson 5, who was their favorite group? And they said, ‘The Delfonics,’ laughs Hart. “They should have said the Temptations! But they were young, and just being honest.”
