Unofficial REMASTERS? HOW?

If anyone has heard any of the unofficial "fan" remasters of your favorite albums which haven't been given the remastering treatment yet, you know that sometimes the albums take on a whole new life.

I've heard that the Cure's Disintegration, Prince's Black Album and 1999, and works by the Smiths all sound amazing remastered by fans.

But what I want to know is,.... how? What are they using to remaster these albums? I know, in general you should go back to the master tapes and remaster the material, but obviously fan remasters can't be doing this.

So how is this done? I've heard some fan remasters before and they sound really really amazing compared to the old official releases, but was always curious as to how they were accomplishing this. (Yes, I'm just THAT ignorant)
