clapping They really do! This mentality is still so pervasive. Folks do not realize the genesis of it because they do not understand history. Also, they do not understand how powerful the influence of media is on their perceptions and beliefs. Often, this influence is on a subconscious level, but it manifests itself through conscious thoughts and acts. For example, I teach writing classes, and as a descriptive exercise I have students describe their ideal mate. Most of my black students - male and female - make it a point to say that they want their mate to be light skinned and have "good" hair. I do this exercise every term and the results are always the same. A few weeks ago, one of my students, whose parents are Jamaican, told me how her mother always tells her that if she could have done it all over she would have had her children with a light skinned man so that they would have been light with "good" hair. She also said that she tells her that she doesn't want any dark grandbabies. As a result her siblings have all had kids with light skinnned people. She said her aunt tells her cousins the same things, but she tells them to mate with white men so that they can have "pretty" kids.

What is so sad about it is that this student is a beautiful young lady. Her physical features and shape are what folks pay for. She really could be a model if she was a few inches taller. However, because she is dark skinned, her mother constantly tells her that she wishes she was lighter. It's beyond disturbing, especially when idiots perpetuate it in music.

I could care less about the creature that is Lil' Wayne. Everyone can like what they like, but I wish folks would give the dark skinned sistas more love. I'm not even dark skinned, but I am keenly aware of the effects of this kind of foolishness, and it bothers me.

Damn shame! I grew up with my mother telling me bullshit like "It's a good thing you're smart and will be able to take care of yourself because you'll never be able to find a man to take care of you." of course because I'm dark.

Girl, West Indians are just as colorstruck as Americans. My ex is Jamaican but due to his Chinese, European, and black Jamaican heritage he looks Italian. All three of his sisters are very light and look more Asian or Hispanic. All three married dark skinned black men, and had children of varying hues. Whem his mother visits, she treats the darker skinned grandchildren like shit and lavishes her attention on the lighter ones.

I was the first black girl he'd ever dated and he was over 30 years old when we met. His sisters later told me they were shocked and delighted to see me but knew mama was not gonna be happy. rolleyes The bullshit abounds, but like TO said, "I LOVES me some me!!!" and I don't need anyone's approval or acceptance to know I'm beautiful in all my chocolatiness, Okay???? biggrin

When I hear shit like that, I want to do serious damage to the person saying it, man or woman. They're just as ignorant as some redneck. No excuse for that kind of thinking - whatever happened to "black is beautiful"?

I got news for these fools - doesn't matter how light/dark you are, we're all n the same boat. Don't believe me? Drive through certain neighborhoods and you'll get a dose of reality.

No they shouldn't but they do for some odd reason. Who cares what lil Wanye thinks only women who like those good for nothing thugs do.

The whole Light is right comes from home, I'm just so tire blaming the media. The black community does the whole Light v.s Dark and it's so boring.

I say preference some men and women are colorstruck but no all.

But what I do notice is since the south took over the Hip-Hip game. the video gals have become more and more fairer hmmm My cousin told me the Brown paper bag test is alive and well down there so.....

That term is very hmmm to me. Because I remember my mom telling me how werid Black people when Vanessa Willams won Miss America was acting. She finds the whole Black pride a joke.

It's like people want to change Black is beautiful to Dark Skin is beautiful which it is all shade of black is.

Don't EVEN blame that shit on the South, dark skinned sisters have never been featured regularly as the head video hoe regardless of whether the artist was East Coast, West Coast, or from the South. This is true throughout the entertainment industry and is not just a "Southern thang."

Black community are at fault for this. Both men and women are. I just don't believe society has to make one feel good about thereself.

But why would you be offended if he says dark girls are ugly, it's just his opinion(sarcasm). I find it interesting you wouldn't be offended by what he said because it's "just his preference", but you would be offended by him saying something that is "just his opinion".

When will our people wake up? We still believe that anything that's close to being appearing or being white is better, whether we are concious of it or not.
I am convinced Beyonce's career would not be where it is, if she had dark skin.

Divide and Conquer. Men have too much power over women now a days and they know it is so crazy.

Who ever went to that dumb ass party should be ashamed of them self. I would never talk to a guy who only like me for my skin tone but now a days Black women need men and the media point of views to feel better about themself so sad.

Well ACTUALLY, its not that I would be offended if he says that dark girls are ugly - on a personal level (as a dark skinned female) i could care less, its his opinion - he's one less troll that i have to worry about waltzing in my direction.

However, by him saying it in that way is way more direct (and hostile) than him saying he likes "red bones".

i mean yea, subliminally thru that line he is advocating a light is right ideal, but its not as negative as saying i like red bones cuz all you dark skinned chicks are ugly. THATS a statement that would grab everyones attention. THATS the type of statement tht could negatively affect the mind of a young person. and THATS the type of statement that would REALLY bother me because of the fact that it IS so clear in its intentions.

him saying he likes red bones (IMHO) isnt necesarily going to make someone say yea cuz dark chicks are ugly, i mean lets face it - the views blacks encounter on a daily basis are more likely to do that than a lil wayne lyric. but if he were to turn around and say dark girls are ugly etc.. etc.. then that could possibly make someone say hmmm maybe he's right (and this assesment would then be reinforced by what we face daily)

trust me i am well aware of this issue in our community, as i just did a senior project on it. its disgusting and unfortunate, but it goes way beyond a lil wayne lyric that most people probably arent noticing much anyway
Yesterday is dead...tomorrow hasnt arrived yet....i have just ONE day...
...And i'm gonna be groovy in it!
