how did that whole effeminate trend of the 80's begin anyway? it seems to me like we went from the button downed gentleman of the sixties which due to the civil rights, sexual, and counter-cultural revolutions gave way, to the funky brothas of the 70s, and then out of no where we just leapfrogged to the androgynous men of the 80's. How did that happen?
Did Prince ever deny he had sex with his sister? I believe not. So there U have it..

Prince, butch? Excuse me while I die laughing over here

That right I said it. Prince wears almost no make-up these days. As a matter of fact, the very last time Prince ever looking feminine was during The Gold Experience-era.

Humm.. I think its better that way.. I mean, the dood is 50!! Do U really wanna C some 50 yrs old gentleman dressed like a drag on scene?? Even one of his "mentors" , David Bowie has stopped the androgynous thing long time ago.. Princey should not be the one bringing the "androgynous black look" back, he was a pioneer and if he does, he would be such a lame thing, just like Jay Z coming back from "retirement" or Michael Jordan...
It's up to the new artists to do... But unfortunatly, black artists nowadays arent too risky... They'd rather stick to the stereotype of "black hip hop thug gangsta" rather than daring taking music to another level... No wonder hip hop and R&B suck nowadays.. Its all the same..
I would like to see the male alter-ego of Lady GaGa, and better yet, a black one.. It would be such a kick in the groin of conservative mentality in the black music business :-d

what is this about mase and trannies-do tell?

Pastor Mase had a car accident while cruising the tranny prostitute track in Atlanta. After he rear ended someone, his car had to be towed. out of embarrassment, he remained in the car, trying to hide as his car was being towed away.

Rahsaan Patterson is quite feminine, well he might be gay, this guy Rahbi too but I don't think he's gay.

loooool!

Back to the topic, its true, Rahsaan is a little effeminate, but in a natural way, he's prob gay, but I don't know if he counts... He is just effeminate, not "playing it", and his doesnt consider it a part of his artistry like Prince or Bowie... So I doesnt know if it counts

wow those dudes look pretty cool and you're right i forgot about Andre 3000! him and lenny kravitz might be the only ones who still sort of rock that look. man i'm surprised people don't rip Andre 3000 to shreds for his dress sense.

you really hit it right on the head. people are way to scared to try something so bold in their looks. only the women seem to be taking it to the next level. a male black lady gaga would be the bomb!!

In the 80's there were so many feminine/androgynous artists like Prince, MJ, Rick James, Andre Cymone, etc that did not give a damn about how they were percieved. I can't think of anyone like that today. I suppose there's the Dream and Ne Yo but they obviously care way too much about people thinking they might be gay and by the way I don't think neither of them are. I just want to see the old flashy, freaky stars out there again!

The reason they did that was 2 not be type casted in R&B.
That is no longer an issue 2day.

I was going to say that same thing. I don't think this is limited to black male artists. It's a time thing. I don't see many young androgynous white acts. Most of the white, black, Latin, whatever acts are all pretty cookie cutter to me in the mainstream.

That's because you gotta be cool, have style, have taste, have imagination, and be strong minded enough to push the boundaries, look and act like a star, and not give a damn what anyone else thinks. Hell, these dead ass motherfuckers of the last 15 years don't even have enough taste to make good music so they sure as hell don't have enough taste to have a look of their own. For a group that frowns on homosexuality so much, they make music that is much more slower and duller than Liberace. At least Liberace had style though.
