Michael Jackson, rapper Fabolous lead album charts

By Monica Herrera and Keith Caulfield

NEW YORK/LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Rapper Fabolous ruled the Billboard 200 album chart for the first time in his career on Wednesday, but a Michael Jackson's hits collection sold more copies and becomes the year's second-best selling album.

Since Jackson's "Number Ones" came out more than 18 months ago -- in 2003, to be exact -- it is ineligible for the Billboard 200, and instead leads the Comprehensive Albums chart, which combines catalog and current releases.

It sold 114,000 copies during the week ended August 2, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Its total for the year now adds up to 1,370,000 copies, moving it past the "Hannah Montana" movie soundtrack (1,338,000) and Eminem's "Relapse" (1,319,000). Only Taylor Swift's "Fearless" (with 1,499,000) stands in Jackson's way as 2009's top seller.

The King of Pop has now held the best-selling album in the U.S. for five out of the past six weeks. "Number Ones" stepped aside only when Daughtry's "Leave This Town" bowed with 269,000 two weeks ago.

Back on the Billboard 200, Fabolous' "Loso's Way" sold 99,000 copies. The New York rapper charted as high as No. 2 when 2007's "From Nothin' to Somethin'" shifted 159,000 in its first week.

The chart's second-highest debut came from "High School Musical" star Ashley Tisdale, who landed at No. 12 with 25,000 copies of her second album, "Guilty Pleasure." Tisdale's 2007 album, "Headstrong," debuted at No. 4 with 64,000.

Last week's No. 1 -- also from a Disney starlet -- Demi Lovato's "Here We Go Again," tumbled to No. 8 in its second week, selling 39,000 copies.

Daughtry's "Leave This Town" held at No. 2 with 62,000, while both Maxwell's "BLACKsummers'night" (No. 3 with 55,000) and the "Now 31" compilation (No. 4 with 53,000) also stayed put.

The Black Eyed Peas' "The E.N.D." moved up one spot to No. 5 with 49,000, while Kings of Leon's "Only By the Night" climbed two slots to No. 6 with 47,000. The band played NBC's "Today" show last Friday, likely sparking the gain.

The "Hannah Montana 3" TV soundtrack fell two to No. 7 with 41,000. Rounding out the top 10 were Swift's "Fearless" (No. 9 with 38,000) and Lady GaGa's "The Fame" (No. 10 with 27,000).

Overall album sales totaled 5.96 million units, down 4.6% compared to the sum last week (7.35 million) and down 19.4% compared to the same sales week of 2008 (7.36 million). Year-to-date album sales stand at 207.7 million, down 14.2% compared to the same total at this point last year (242.2 million).

Michael Jackson's Album Number Ones Now Second Only to Taylor Swift as Year's Top Seller

Thursday August 6, 2009

Michael Jackson is making an argument for the title of "King of Pop" even well after he is gone. His album Number Ones has been the bestselling album in the US for five of the six weeks since his untimely death. Only the debut week of Daughtry's sophomore release Leave This Town disrupted Jackson's reign at the top.

Now Michael Jackson is closing in on an even greater achievement than #1 in weekly sales. Number Ones has moved into second place in total sales for the year 2009. The total sales for the year are now 1.37 million which is just ahead of the soundtrack to Hannah Montana: The Movie at 1.33 million and Eminem's Relapse at 1.31 million. Taylor Swift's total stands at approximately 1.5 million which may be well within reach of Michael Jackson's ultimate sales.

it probably makes him feel special thats he's getting all this media attention and he's probably flattered so many people think his ugly ass can make cute kids.

LOL. See that's how you realize when it comes to MJ all reasoning goes out the window. People just don't think logically. Looking at Debbie,it should be obvious that she would've had to mate with an extremely good looking dude (Mike Jackson) to make such beautiful children. The ugly doctor & Debbie would have produced some frankensteins. Case closed.

I'm not white but both Klein and Debbie appear to have straight hair. & Prince and Paris have curly/wavy hair. IDK if that's possible but of course I don't have that type of hair so I wouldn't know.

Judge approves Jackson collectors' items

By ANTHONY McCARTNEY, Associated Press Writer Anthony Mccartney, Associated Press Writer – 8 mins ago

LOS ANGELES – The King of Pop is coming to calendars and collectors' coin cases after a judge approved several deals involving the singer's estate.

Attorneys for the current administrators of Michael Jackson's estate presented the deals for approval Friday morning. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff signed off on agreements for Jackson-themed items including calendars, school supplies, posters and a commemorative coin.

Beckloff has scheduled a hearing on Monday to decide whether to approve other deals involving Jackson, including a movie project that would feature the singer's final rehearsals and preparations for a series of comeback concerts in London.

Michael Jackson Estate Plans To Sell Clothing, Downloads And MoreMerchandise rollout includes everything from Second Life tattoos to a museum exhibition

Considering the reported $400 million in debt he carried at the time of his death, it's no wonder the administrators of Michael Jackson's estate are planning to roll out tons of merchandise to cash in on the current interest in the late pop star.

According to a Los Angeles Times report, estate administrators have sketched out plans for everything from a major motion picture to a TV special, tribute concert and reams of MJ tie-ins ranging from Second Life-ready tattoos to high-end clothing and USB drives.

A court filing from last week by Jeryll S. Cohen, a lawyer for estate administrators John Branca and John McClain, said they anticipate the various products could generate tens of millions of dollars for the singer's estate. The papers were dated July 6, 12 days after the singer's death at the age of 50. The details of the multiple deals were redacted in the 500-plus-page court filing that was made public on Tuesday at a hearing in which Jackson's mother withdrew her bid to become one of the administrators of his estate.

Among the known deals is the $60 million pact with Columbia Pictures to make a feature-length movie out of the more than 100 hours of high-definition footage of rehearsals for Jackson's planned This Is It 50-date residency at the O2 arena in London. Jackson's estate would receive 90 percent of the profit from the film, with the remainder going to concert promoter AEG Live. There are also plans for a soundtrack, a director's-cut DVD, two special editions of the film after its theatrical run and a stipulation that Branca and McClain can produce at least one tribute concert as long as the broadcast doesn't interfere with the film rollout.

A wide-ranging deal with merchandising powerhouse Bravado highlights plans to produce a wide variety of Jackson-related memorabilia, from photo books and trading cards to lithographs, buttons, live recordings on USB drives, online games and denim and high-end clothing. There are also proposals for digital clothing, tattoos and accessories for VR worlds like Second Life and Stardoll, embossed wine decanters, theme packs for the Xbox and wallpaper and screensavers for cell phones.

Among the other plans is a proposal for a traveling "MJ Exhibition" of memorabilia from the late singer to be shown at museums, which will also be accompanied by exhibition-related merchandise. A petition filed by Cohen on Monday also mentions a deal "very favorable for the estate," with iTunes parent company Apple Inc. for the promotion and distribution of Jermaine Jackson's rendition of "Smile," which Michael's brother performed at his memorial service.

All the plans are subject to the approval of a Los Angeles probate judge who, according to the Times, will review the documents at a hearing Monday.

Alert on M.D. Abuse Of Jackson Drug

By ALICIA MUNDY

Abuse of the sedative suspected in Michael Jackson's death is a growing problem among medical professionals, increasing pressure on the government to restrict it as a controlled substance.

Three days before the pop icon's death on June 25, the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists warned hospitals to restrict access to the potent drug propofol because some doctors and nurses are addicted to it.

Propofol, sold under the brand name Diprivan, is a widely used hospital sedatives. Because it is quick-acting and rapidly leaves the system, it is convenient for routine procedures such as same-day knee and cosmetic surgery, colonoscopies and bone repair.

The qualities that make propofol a popular sedative also make it a recreational drug for some in the medical profession. It doesn't show up in standard drug tests in the urine, and with a half-life of only five minutes, it doesn't leave the user groggy or affect behavior in a way that signals a substance-abuse problem.

The number of people with a propofol problem is small, and there is little data tracking addictions or death. A 2007 study covering 23,385 anesthesia personnel published in the journal Anesthesia & Analgesia by Paul Wischmeyer, a University of Colorado anesthesiologist, found 25 cases of propofol abuse over the preceding decade. The rate was a fivefold increase from a decade earlier. The study cited seven deaths. Dr. Wischmeyer and others in the field say that they know of other cases and estimate that the total number of deaths is at least several dozen in recent years.

"If you try to count backward from 100 after it's injected, you don't get to 97," says Dr. Wischmeyer. He and others say the drug is safe for hospital patients as long as a medical worker monitors "airway management" and provides oxygen as needed to ensure breathing doesn't stop.

Getty Images

Michael Jackson at a press conference on March 5, 2009 in London, England.

Anesthetists and users say propofol can bring a brief but captivating high as the sedation wears off. Some call the habit, "dancing with a white rabbit," referring to the drug's color and hallucinogens of the 1960s. Others call it "pronapping," because the drug induces a short rest for medical personnel between long shifts.

Most medical centers don't lock up propofol or closely monitor inventory as they would for addictive painkillers such as Oxycontin. Propofol is readily accessible in most hospital supply rooms, sometimes along with Band-Aids and antibiotic ointments.

Paul Earley, medical director of Talbott Recovery Campus in Atlanta, which treats many medical professionals for substance abuse, said addictions to opiates and other drugs obscured the growing use of propofol.

"I was injecting it 50 times a day when I was in my worst period," says an anesthesiologist in the Midwest, who recently completed a stint in rehabilitation to kick the propofol habit. He said he began "pronapping" a couple of years ago while under stress from his job, family and finances. He hid the signs of shooting up by putting a port for a syringe on his leg, where it wasn't visible.

At night, he would inject the drug into the port in the bathroom, where his wife assumed he was brushing his teeth. "Sometimes it acted so fast, I couldn't get back to bed in time," said the anesthesiologist. He would pass out on the floor, terrifying his wife, and he said that on occasion he broke his nose or cheekbone or sprained a wrist.

After Mr. Jackson's death, police found propofol and oxygen tanks in his house, the Associated Press reported. Mr. Jackson's case would be rare, however. Almost all of the victims of propofol addiction and overdose are medical professionals, particularly anesthesia providers, experts say. The drug isn't generally available outside hospitals and clinics.

Drug abuse among medical professionals has received growing attention over the years, prompting some states to develop prevention and treatment programs. Long shifts and stressful life-and-death cases, as well as ready access to dangerous drugs, have all fueled the problem, say rehabilitation experts.

Propofol is so potent that a tiny amount -- 20 milligrams -- can be the difference between rest and death. "It enters your bloodstream fast, and even highly trained anesthesiologists can't control it, and die. They don't even have seconds to pull out the needle," said Art Zwerling, a registered nurse anesthetist and counselor with the Association of Nurse Anesthetists, a 39,000-member group.

Teva Pharmaceuticals Ltd., which makes generic propofol, and APP Pharmaceuticals Inc., which sells the drug under the Diprivan name, said separately that the drug is safe when used as directed in proper settings.

Propofol was never classified as a controlled substance by the Drug Enforcement Administration when it was first approved 20 years ago, nor was it recommended for that status by the Food and Drug Administration. Two years ago, a citizen petition was filed at the DEA, asking that propofol be designated a controlled substance, which requires an FDA recommendation. Representatives of both agencies said they've been reviewing the matter. One official said a decision could come in a few months.

Jackson's Estate Sets Fresh Deals

An FDA spokeswoman said since Mr. Jackson's death, the agency has received many questions from doctors and the public about when and whether it will decide to classify propofol.

Making propofol a controlled substance under DEA rules would require hospitals to track inventory, account for all vials, list users, and lock it up with narcotics. That is not popular with many anesthesiology providers, and a poll by Anesthesiology News taken after Mr. Jackson's death found that 61% of them oppose it.

Several anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists say that because propofol is an important drug for use in emergencies, it must be kept handy. In some cases, a surgeon may suddenly need more propofol to keep a patient sedated, and a few seconds' delay makes a difference. They favor hospitals taking voluntary steps to control inventory.

Another concern: Tighter regulation might impede doctors and nurses from seeking help for addiction, because abusing a DEA-controlled drug is more likely to cost them their licenses and lead to criminal charges.

Clarence Ward, a California anesthesiologist, wrote in a 2008 article in the California Society of Anesthesiologists bulletin, that too many doctors don't acknowledge abuse. In an interview, he said people die "not necessarily from intent, but from an inability to control a drug that causes abrupt loss of consciousness."

I had a colonoscopy done and that propofol sho' had me sleeping like a baby! You literally have to be shaken to wake up, and you still be groggy wanting to go back to sleep.

Yeah, and funny today marks one month ago for the memorial... I just don't think Jermaine updated or put to rest what's been happening with opportunist
since his brothers death,I didn't get the chance to see Tito's interview I do think he would have a fresh perspective to things overall. While I do believe Jermaine is genuine,I just thought it was a bit odd to sing SMILE again to receive a reward on Michael's behalf again. It takes away from that moment imo.

So now this new site to continue Michael's work paired with music with Larry Kings wife Shawn seems this latest interview was to introduce these tribute shows.Glad it's going to charity is my eyebrow raised... slightly just slightly.
