FUNK Archaeology Rare funk, soul, psychedelia and rap you won't hear anywhere else, selected by Egon
Features: Layover Loot: A Stop In Dallas For Local Gems March 31, 2009 En route to SXSW 2009, DJ and label head Egon made a stopover at the home of Roger Boykin, an accomplished Dallas musician, radio DJ and owner of Soultex Records. The detour proved to be a rewarding one: Boykin let his guest sift through heaps of obscure Dallas funk, jazz and soul cuts. Egon offered to take a few records off his hands — for the right price, of course. The Sun Sets On Record Discovery In Tokyo March 20, 2009 Japan has long been a cratedigger's paradise, with an inexhaustible supply of esoteric treasures, but keen dealers now hawk their wares on eBay. Despite the dwindling amount of rare vinyl to be found in Japanese record stores, record collector Egon still manages to return home with some gems. West African Finds At The WFMU Record Fair January 8, 2009 While most regional record fairs have been replaced with gigantic mega-shows, the WFMU Record Fair in New York City still offers the collector a chance to find unknown minimal-synth seven-inches from Germany, random rap 12-inches from the Bronx's Golden Age, and Japanese Kabuki-psychedelia. Listen to five obscure West African funk, highlife, Juju and psychedelia tracks from the 1970s. Carolina Funk: Atlantic Coast Underground November 11, 2008 The Carolinas are known for bluegrass, not funk. But during the late '60s and early '70s, numerous bands from the area recorded regionally released funk 45s. Take a listen to some of the rarest and heaviest tracks. Funk From Way South Of The Border October 29, 2008 Many Mexican musicians in the late '60s and early '70s introduced listeners to the "hard" side of funk. These bands played raucous covers of classic hits and composed their own strident songs. This list compiles some of the best and most obscure cuts of the era. Fast Rap: Tongue-Twisting Bangers October 21, 2008 Fast Rap, a style of hyperactive and multisyllabic rap spewed over uptempo beats, is nearly extinct. Listen to five classic early-'90s songs that exemplify the trend, from artists such as Percee P, Lonnie O, Organized Konfusion and Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth. The Soul Of James Brown October 16, 2008 It should come as no surprise that James Brown has inspired countless tributes and covers, both good and bad. Explore five of the most unusual and exceptional examples, from inspired tributes to psychedelic reinventions. Lost Funk Masterpieces Of Ethiopia September 16, 2008 Record collectors entranced by the otherworldly sounds of Ethiopian funk and jazz of the 1960s and 70s had only rare 45s to slake their thirst until the Ethiopiques series of albums hit US shores in the late 90s. Those albums feature some of the best music to come out of the scene, but still more albums await re-release. The Godfather Of South Korean Rock September 11, 2008 Shin Jung Hyun, commonly called the godfather of Korean rock 'n' roll, is often compared to Elvis Presley. But that really doesn't do him justice. Sure, he might have been as popular as Elvis in South Korea. But he's more like the David Axelrod, Brian Wilson or Jimi Hendrix of South Korea. Here are a few songs from the star, as well as some of his protégés. Brazilian Psych-Rock For A Night On The Porch August 7, 2008 In the 1970s in Recife, Brazil, a scene coalesced around a musician named Lula Cortes. An offshoot of the psychedelic rock scene happening around the world at the time, the movement created a handful of labels that recorded, produced and distributed some of the most beautiful music ever, perfect for hot summer nights. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= An interesting NPR series: http://www.npr.org/templa...d=99077537 tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. Nice.
Egon is definitely one of the true archaeologists and one of the top notch Funk DJs on the West Coast. His Funky Sole night in L.A. is the major Funk night in the city.

There's a good compilation called Carolina Funk, compiled by Jason Perlmutter, who's the main cat down in the Carolinas, when it comes to Funk. The album/CD was released on Jazzman records last year. This is some shit that you will never, ever find at your local record store. You can buy it here and listen to samples: http://www.amazon.com/Car...B0012BWESW [Edited 7/27/09 12:16pm]

The Florida Funk: 1968-1975 comp... ...includes some groups I came in contact with during my stay there. Most notably some good friends of mine at the time, Weston Prim & Blacklash. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. There is a whole series - Carolina Funk, Texas Funk, Midwestern Funk, Florida Funk (kudos to your personal connections) ... a Virginia Funk is also in the works. A friend of mine in L.A. has also released a L.A. Funk compilation, which is dope!

Bobby Williams & Weston Prim's bands were top-notch. Another band on that comp, The Montereys, were hot too. Much respect to the folks that do the serious work putting these comps together. The Numero Group also has a nice series of obscure cuts & bands. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. Shango said: http://www.dcsoulrecordings.com/ D.C. Soul Recordings is an awesome website. A friend of mine, DJ Nitekrawler, runs the site. He's somewhat DC's local Soul and Funk historian. He is an awesome DJ who hosts a great monthly Funk party in DC and he's currently writing a book about DC Soul. He's also working on a DC Soul compilation for Jazzman, which should be released later this year. http://funkyvirginia.blogspot.com/ This is the best blog for Virginia Soul. One of the guys used to be my partner here in Richmond VA, hosting VA's monthly Soul party Soulpower. Both guys have left Richmond, one lives in NYC, the other in Buffalo, NY. Together, they got the best collection of Virginia Soul and Funk records.

It takes a lot of dedication to put these comps together, because the guys who compile them usually track down the artists (or relatives) and they acquire the licensing rights for the releases. These are not bootlegs. [Edited 7/27/09 13:55pm]

Yeah, the DC Soul-site was the first one i saw some years back. Just saw the latest add on there from the Capital Hill label, and great that they also added their flickr-photostream with scans and other goodies.
