Did Clarkson steal Beyonce's song?

Word around the Web is that Kelly Clarkson's new single, "Already Gone," bears a striking resemblance to Beyonce's hit, "Halo." Most noticeably, both songs were co-written by the same person and share the same backing track of somber piano, crashing drums and hand-claps. Kelly asked her label not to release the song out of respect for Beyonce. Listen here:

There are some similarities but it's not the same song. I really like the song, actually more than Halo and I don't see why Kelly shouldn't release it. I think some people are being over sensitive here.
Any songs done by the same producer will have a similar sound. It's happened before, so I don't see the big deal at all.

The best excuse is that writers are lazy! One somewhat similar example is a song called "Cross My Heart". It was recorded by three different artists all around the same time. It's hard to say who reocrded it first, second and third but I believe both Tracy Spenser (young "Star Search" singer who had a few hits on her next album) and Eighth Wonder (a UK dance pop group with a very beautiful Patsy Kensit as it's leader singer) got it before Martika. By the time the writer produced it for Martika's album, it had already been a minor hit for Eighth Wonder (I believe....don't hold me to this).

The fact that the same person wrote the song says a great deal.....

Yeah, he saw the potential to have 2 big hits with 2 big artists.

May have been a record company thing also. Sony/BMG is the parent company for both Kelly and Beyonce.

Kelly Clarkson is pissed. Her new songAlready Gone was produced by the same guy that did Beyonce’s Halo. So now of course the music world accused her of jockin’ Beyonce. There is definitely a similarity... SMH

If you’ve noticed similarities between Kelly Clarkson’s new single "Already Gone" and Beyoncé’s hit "Halo," well, you’re not the only one.

Turns out Clarkson has also noticed, and she’s not too happy about it.

In an interview with Canada’s CBC radio network, the former "American Idol" champ said she was unaware of any similarities between her song and Beyoncé’s "Halo" until she heard the two songs side by side (according to Clarkson, her All I Ever Wanted album was finished before Beyoncé’s I Am... Sasha Fierce was released). And she’s not mincing words about who she blames for the similarities: OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder, who co-wrote both songs.

"Ryan and I met each other at the record label, before he was working with anyone else. He’s from Oklahoma, I’m from Texas; we got along really well and had some of the same influences," Clarkson said. "We wrote about six songs together, four or five of them made the album. It was all fine and dandy. I’d never heard of a song called ‘Halo’...[Beyoncé's] album came out when my album was already being printed.

"No one’s gonna be sittin’ at home, thinkin’ ‘Man, Ryan Tedder gave Beyoncé and Kelly the same track to write to,’" she continued. "No, they’re just gonna be sayin’ I ripped someone off. I called Ryan and said, ‘I don’t understand. Why would you do that?’"

"Gone" and "Halo" do share some striking similarities, most notably in the backing track, which features somber piano, crashing drums and hand-claps.

Clarkson - who clashed with her label in the past - said that she’s upset that "Already Gone" was released as a single without her blessing, but that, at this point, there’s really nothing to do about the situation.

"It sucks, but it’s one of those things I have no control over," she told the CBC. "I already made my album. At this point, the record company can do whatever they want with it. It’s kind of a sh__y situation, but...you know, you learn."

At press time, a spokesperson for Tedder had not responded to MTV News’ request for comment on the situation.

no it was writers fault. for instance Britney's song Shadow sounds alot like Avril Levaigne's song from the same era because of the Matrix worked with both of them.

I agree. If the same co-writer worked on both songs, then the best explanation is that that person is lazy and used the same formula on both songs. Does a person steal from themselves? I know I recycle my own ideas. You never know which ones will work.

And since Beyonce & Kelly probably only have limited creative input, musically speaking, I doubt it would be a case of "Kelly stealing from Beyonce" anyway.

Graycap, I will not tell you what I think. I will tell you what I know.

Clive Davis (Kelly's boss) is a f***ing idiot. THIS old man refused to promote Kelly's co-written 3rd album when she wanted to be more involved in the creative process of making original tracks. But yet, Clive thinks it's great for Kelly to do a Beyonce-type track for the 4th album.
rolleyes

Yes, all of you can quote me! It was bad enough that Clive forced Kelly to be Whitney Houston v2 on the debut album. And now Clive wanted Kelly to be Beyonce v2?!? What's next, Kelly needed to have an affair with a rogue Freemason so she can play in an occult to become Sasha Fierce v2?!?

Kelly should had done a George Michael/Marvin Gaye and tell Clive that she will NEVER do anymore albums for Sony/BMG unless she maintain full control over the creative process.

Granted, it would have gotten her fired or potentially ruined her music career (as BlaqueKnight was saying). But as a fan of REAL music, I would have supported AND respected her for sticking to her principles than to basically sell-out on her musical self-respect & dignity like most of these suckers within her generation of artists.
