Let's Discuss Stevie Wonder

I've had his At The Close Of A Century cd for some years now and he truly is a musical genius wink I found myself having a renewed interest in all things Stevie especially after everyone was in tears at his performance at the memorial service wink But I was disappointed to find out that his last song from the service is not on this cd sad I don't know the songs name sad Anyway, can we discuss Stevie's career and life? I think he is quite worthy of a nice thread wink

It was either "Never Dreamed You'd Leave in Summer" or "They Won't Go When I'll Go." Of course, there's no excuse not to own the two albums from which those songs come (well, except Where I'm Coming From being rather scarce on CD).

If you're really serious about Stevie, every album from 1970 to 1980 is worth owning. That box set leaves off essential gems like "Jesus Children of America," "Please Don't Go," "Summer Soft"...

I have that box set and it is incredible music But more often than not,I play the actual albums.Stevie has always been an "album artist".His hits only tell part of the story.

I am a fan of 70's Stevie. Those who are my friends on this board, know how strongly I feel about, SITKOL. I think it should be required listening in school. That being said, I am not a major fan of his albums, afterward. To me, once he got involved in the apartheid movement, his music kind of went with it. Gone were the melodies that I had grown to love. While his 70's music did have a message, it still had melody. While I have his "A Time To Love" CD, I rarely listen to it. Give me the Stevie Wonder of the 70's any day.

I don't consider any of his '60s albums to be truly great, but there certainly were a lot of great songs. The box set does an excellent job covering that period. After Hotter Than July, the only album I really love is Characters. In Square Circle and A Time to Love are good for the most part — and Jungle Fever to a lesser extent — but none of it matches the '70s material obviously.

nodI agree! Everyone should own his 70's albums from Signed, Sealed Delivered to JTTSLOP. The 'At The Close of A Century' box set does a splendid job of covering his 60's output because alot of those albums he did during the period is hard to find on CD and it they had that Motown 60's hits and filler formula. His 80's stuff is good too, but Hotter Than July is the only one that came close to the level of his legendary 70's run. The only album I can't get into that much is 'Conversation Peace,' which has some fine cuts, but the production on some of those are gimmicky and flat. 'Jungle Fever' and 'A Time 2 Love' are good albums too. His 2-disc live album 'Natural Wonder' is worth seeking out too, because he's awesome on the stage, just like when he's in studio.

So should 'Innervisions'. To me, that's ultimate Stevie.
