Weather Report - "Nubian Sundance" (1974) ...
I still remember the first time I heard this as a kid, back in 1974 - I was like, "WTF!?!", but for me it had the same effect as people hearing 'Purple Haze' or 'Sgt Pepper'' for the first time, but from an Electric Jazz / World Music perspective....I love Skip Hadden and Ishmael Wilburn doubling up[ on the drums...and Zawinul is--well, stunning on the Synths.... From the album, 'Mysterious Traveler' Joe Zawinul - Keyboards, Synthesizers Wayne Shorter - Saxophone Skip Hadden - Drums Ishmael Wilburn - Drums Dom Um Ramao - Percussion Alphonso Johnson - Bass Edna Write: Vocalist Jim Gilstrap: Vocalist Marti McCall: Vocalist Jessica Smith: Vocalist Billie Barnum: Vocalist ... Yeah--I dig the fact that, even though it's a composition, it's wide open for little stabs of improvisation...then, at the 5:43 mark, they start layering all these parts again, little by little, building to the explosion of applause at the end..... ... I'm not a huge Weather Report fan, save for their first two albums and this one (the rest are too light and fluffy for me....even with Jaco holding down the bass). This is a GREAT record! Occupy Alphabet Street!

I came across some interesting comments from Joe Zawinul on the composition and the story behind it: From Binkie.net: 'Zawinul told Jazz Forum magazine, "'Nubian Sundance' is a complete improvisation of mine which I taped at home. Then I took the music from the tape and orchestrated it. So, as a matter of fact, you have an improvisation which was worked over later in such a manner that you never lose this feeling of purity....." 'He told Downbeat journalist Conrad Silvert..."....It's a wedding dance. You can hear the man's voice calling, "Godinia", and later on she calls him, "Accru". And then you hear the people cheering and applauding, that's like a toast, a certain ritual. The moral of the story is that if you meet the right person in your life, you always know from the very beginning."-' ...
