One hit wonders of the 1990's

let's take a break from all of the Michael Jackson coverage and Beatles tribute/dissing to remember a different time, the time when Cosby's kids grew up, people stopped going to places where everybody knows your name but instead made much ado about "nothing", everybody seemed to have six really close "friends", black women were "living single", white people looked really grungy (and their style and music reflected that), and there was a heated bi-coastal dispute in hip-hop. It was also the time the trans-Atlantic spice trade was reborn in the form of five cheeky young women, three young brothers from Oklahoma taught everyone how to "mmmbop", and a new generation of teen heartthrobs would rule the music world.

Yes, I'm talking about the 1990's. The decade may have been dominated by the likes of Mariah, Janet, Madge, Celine, 2Pac, Biggie, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and Wu-Tang Clan, but it also had its share of one-hit wonders. Who can remember these classic gems:

EMF - Unbelievable
Mr. Big - To Be With You
Londonbeat - I've Been Thinking 'Bout You
Joe Public - Live and Learn
Skee-Lo - I Wish
Luniz - I've Got Five On It
Snow - Informer
Souls of Mischief - 93 To Infinity
Ini Kamoze - Here Comes The Hotstepper
Craig Mack - Flava In Ya Ear
OMC - How Bizarre
Merrill Bainbridge - Mouth
Donna Lewis - I Love You (Always Forever)
Mark Morrison - Return of the Mack
Meredith Brooks - Bitch
Tonic - If You Could Only See
Len - Steal My Sunshine
LFO - Summer Girls

Some of my favorites:

Marcy Playground - Sex and Candy

Blind Melon - No Rain

The BoDeans - Closer to Free

Harvey Danger - Flagpole Sitta

Primitive Radio Gods - Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth With Money in My Hand

The Cardigans - Lovefool

Chris Isaak - Wicked Game

Lisa Loeb - Stay (I Missed You)

Deep Blue Something - Breakfast at Tiffany's

Sister Hazel - All for You

4 Non Blondes - What's Up?

The Heights - How Do You Talk to an Angel?

Lots of great songs and great '90s cheese there. I couldn't find UNV's "Something's Goin' On" on YouTube at all.

If you've ever heard it, you'll remember it as soon as it starts. It begins with the title line.

Jane Child - Don't Wanna Fall in Love (New Jack Swing Club)

Perfect Gentlemen - Ooh La La (I Can't Get Over You)

(I don't believe the follow-up, "One More Chance," was big enough to count)

Voices - Yeah Yeah Yeah

(Notice the half of the group that went on to bigger stardom)

O.K., I can't believe I'm about to admit I know about this. But didn't one LFO have another hit song about Jennifer Love Hewitt?

She was apparently dating one of the guys in the group and appeard in the video.

That girl loves her some musicians.

You're thinking of "Girl on TV," which peaked at #10. "Summer Girls" went all the way to #3. That probably makes them a two-hit wonder. Other 2-hit wonders:

Tara Kemp
