Just like the Randy and Jermaine thread that mysteriously got locked, let's talk about the careers of the other members solo attempts.

Jackie's "be the one" album in the late 80's is probably, to me, the most underated. Anyone who liked Robert Brookins "let it be me" album should definately get it, as he is involved on all the tracks.

Whilst it is lacking in slowjams, the midtempo's are great fun. Nothing deep, but solid rnb nonetheless. Infact, as an album, its a real fav of mine. Its got one great slowjam on it though called "stuck on you". Funny, its the uptempo's that let Robert Brookins album down, but here, he gets the funkier tracks right this time (probably because of no Foster and McElroy to meddle with). Still, the slowjams on Brookins album are killer, but only a few on Jackies album.

Jackie of course is not as gifted vocally as Robert, but his falsetto is nice enough. Better then Marlon's voice anyway. The "cruizin'" remix is hot aswell.

Marlons album "baby tonight" did have some sucsess apparantly. Still, no second album, but whilst Jackie's album is mostly the work of Robert Brookins, Marlon does alot of his own work here.

Not surprisenly, considering his rather average voice, its dominated by uptempo's with whizz bang synths covering them up LOL. Thats fine by me as I love some of the hi-tech, synth heavy production on this album. Reminds me of Mic Murphy and David Frank. "Baby tonight", the track, is great "lite funk" for example. Its a fun album, but more pop then Jackie's album and altogether, not as satisfying. I still love some of it though, and its much better then you think its going to be.

Overall, I love both albums, but I definately feel Jackie's album, if you like Brookins or late 80's rnb in general, is worth a real look.

Janet and Mj got 90% of the talent in this family.
The other 10% was spread very thin.....

Neither of these examples are very good at all. "Background"-singer voices over what sound like preset keyboard beats. Nothing standout here.

Even most of the non-MJ stuff on "Victory" isn't very good.

I would too if I didn't know Randy and Jackie wrote the best songs on Triumph. I underestimate the other 3 boys because I don't know as much about them musically speaking, but I'm willing to admit that that doesnt necessarily mean that they arent talented.

Randy was like Mike's little right hand man (or the other way around?) They wrote Shake Your Body, That's What You, Can You Feel It and Randy and Jackie wrote Time Waits for No One, I belive Lovely One and Mike and Jackie did Push Me Away, Give It Up. Mike and Tito did Everybody.

Marlon was the next best dancer after MJ, Jackie and Randy were awesome songwriters.

I always saw Tito as the least talented brother, but I might be wrong, but I always thought he was a pretty average guitar player also.

Rebbie is a great singer, Janet was good in the early 80's but after Rhythm Nation it got worse, IMO.

I chatted with someone who toured with tito in the passed few years. He said that Tito is VERY underrated as a musician and is very well respected as a guitarist.

Yep,when the J5 toured Mexico in 75, Tito played with the band while the other brother went to the back for about 15 minutes to rest. It was nice and surprised me. I always thought Tito was average until I seen that.
