I actually think EnVogue are overrated. They're f.i.n.e., yes, but I think they're just good -- not great -- singers.
But "Never Gonna Get It" was far and away my favorite, followed by "Don't Let Go" and "Waiting on You." Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

I don't think they were overrated because they were never as big as say TLC, Salt N' Pepa or Destiny's Child except around the time of the Funky Divas album. At least that's the impression I had. They were big but never as big as those other girl groups

In the field of R&B, I'd say they were probably more popular than those other groups, but they didn't cross over to the pop charts as much. TLC had only 3 #1 R&B hits, Destiny's Child had 4, and Salt-N-Pepa didn't have any. OTOH, En Vogue managed to hit the top 6 times. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

They were big but never as big as those other girl groups I guess I mean overrated not in terms of their crossover sales and popularity, but in terms of the critical response. People seem to credit EnVogue with ENORMOUS singing ability. I think they're good, don't get me wrong; but to the extent they seemed so brilliant, I think it's largely because other '90s R&B acts were so relatively humdrum where vocals are concerned. Well, I agree and disagree. I don't think any of the girls would truly be a huge solo star. That being said, I think they all have strong voices. Indeed, I think a lot of their charm stemmed from the fact that any (or all) of the girls could carry the lead on any particular song. They were a rare girl group where there wasn't one lead singer. Furthermore, you can't discount their harmonies, which were tight and often complex. I think they can stand shoulder to shoulder with any girl group as far as that goes. I'll give them props on harmonies, and another place they are solid to me is live. They definitely sound clean and in control in concert. Their sound, for what it is, is absolutely not merely attributable to studio polishing. [Edited 7/18/09 12:20pm] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

They've certainly had an interesting career... "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

Some of my favorite En Vogue videos that haven't been posted yet:
Lies "Giving Him..." gets my vote for sexiest video ever, but I've always been struck by how beautiful the girls look in the "Lies" video. The close-ups are breathtaking! BTW, I had the cassingle with this remix, but it took me until a few years ago to track down the CD single. Runaway Love "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

There are a couple of "best of" cds. As for a DVD, there is not one, but they do have a GH VHS. The VHS is OOP and is pretty pricey on Amazon. They do have a live DVD, but it's not with Maxine or Dawn. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

I'm with you on the DVD, but I wouldn't advise getting a hits CD when only their first 2 (or 3) albums are essential. If you do go that route, forget Best of En Vogue: it's missing too many tracks (like "You Don't Have to Worry" for one). The Very Best of En Vogue is probably the best one; it's only missing "Too Gone Too Long" and "Riddle." The Platinum Collection omits "Too Gone Too Long" as well as "Whatta Man." 2.Don't Let Go 3.Give It Up Turn It Loose They were great. They were definitely my second favourite girl R&B group of all times after TLC, AND they worked with Prince on Stevie Wonder's What The Fuss. It just seems so unfair they never got a number 1 hit. They were number 2 three times in the states. Hold On in 1990 behind Glenn Medeiros & Bobby Brown's She Ain't Worth It, My Lovin' in 1992 behind Kris Kross' Jump and Don't Let Go in 1997 behind Toni Braxton's Unbreak My Heart.
