Aretha Franklin stands out most to me. Her voice was fucking incredible in her prime. I'm not totally up on her career but I'd say by the 80's the shit just got weaker & raspier & it seems like she couldn't catch her breath (probably the weight gain). I know she's had a long career but I don't think I've heard such a drastic change in a singer's ability/delivery. Sad, really...

Although I don't think it sounds much different now since the 80s (when I first started hearing her) so I don't think she sounds all that bad these days.

No, I mean from when she started (60's?) to the 80's on up nod
heart prince I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! Thank you for being YOU - my little Princey, the best to EVER do it prince heart

I have to go with George Clinton on this one. I mean he was probably never primarily known for his vocals, however listening to him know is like damn, just talk, why sing at all.

It has changed. Yeah I love her old records too, but that's still a powerful voice on her.

I've gotten used to her vocals now. She's still one hell of a singer.

Joni Mitchell's voice has gone from soprano to alto through the decades. Age and cigarettes don't play. lol

Her voice in more recent years carries the authority of a woman who's lived life and has certain proclamations to make. I do enjoy it, but it is definitely less versatile and uplifting and carries a more jaded affect than her younger voice.

definitely. There's a shade of cynicism in her voice now. I prefer her voice during the glory years of '73-'79 or so, where it wasn't quite the high pixie voice anymore, but not Lucille Ball either

Morrissey

Compare his voice from the early Smiths albums to his solo work, and it's clear his voice has become richer, and much more musical.

He kind of yelped before, now he's a crooner cool

Woops! missed your post. Sorry.

I think I agree with you though. ....well maybe not with the 'yelping'!

biggrin OK, maybe "yelped" was a bad choice of word!

I was thinking specifically of the very first Smiths album, where his vocal technique and range are underdeveloped compared with later albums. Even in the Smiths his voice was improving noticeably, but like you say I think now it is better than ever.
This is not an exit

Aside from the fact that he can't scream anymore sad

Chaka Khan
Aretha Franklin
Dionne Warwick
Whitney Houston

sad I will never understand why singers pick up cancer sticks. Their voices are their meal tickets and if you destroy you meal ticket then what? Just doesn't make any sense to me...never will disbelief
