Berry has nothing to do with Motown anymore. He sold the company.

Besides, the way Motown has worked over the years, they release a few recordings here and there. I can see them treating the J5 catalog and the early MJ recordings like they have Marvin Gaye's.

Since Marvin's death, they have released a ton of compilations and reissues on the albums.

You can just hang it up to think you'll get an unreleased Stevie track. He even has it in his will that the tracks not be released after his death.

Question:

Did MJ ever try to buy his Catalog from Motown?

As far as I've read here Motown owns all his work with the J5 for Motown.

If he bought the Beatles, why didn't he buy this one??

hmmm

Hey thanks for catching me on my slip up wink

I don't understand why Stevie's so fucking possessive. I mean sure, when he's alive he might not want them released cause he feels they're not up to scratch but when your dead they should be EVERYONE's music. After all
1)your dead, so does it really matter?
2)your fans love your music regardless.
3)chances are by the time he's dead pop music is going to be a bunch of grunts and inaudible sounds. WE'RE GONNA NEED US SOME STEVIE WONDER!!!!

lol sorry for taking it that far, but why is it that stevie doesn't want his unreleased music distributed?

i read an interview with berry, around '97 or so, and he talked about how mj had asked if he could buy the motown catalog. he said they discussed it for a while but he decided to go with someone else because he was comfortable with someone he knew there.

i saw a top ten list of dumb business mistakes and berry was on it. he sold some of the company to mca for $61 million. mca turned around and sold to universal for a shitload more money. when you think about it, $61 mil is only slightly higher than the $45 mil that mj paid for atv. the beatles were the jewel in the atv crown, but berry had many jewels - tempts, tops, supremes, stevie, j5. universal has probably made that money back and then some.

He didn't buy the Beatles recordings, he bought the publishing catalog (which is actually the song itself). His purchase not only included the Beatles work, it included Sly and the Family Stone's material amongst others.

The songs that MJ and J5 recorded while at Motown was very diverse. MJ considered purchasing the master recordings, but not the publishing rights to the songs.
