Lionel Richie sold 10 million in the US with his Can't Slow Down album that had hit after hit after hit on it. "Songs..." sold 5 million copies but because of the double album deal, that's why it's "Diamond" according to the RIAA. Also let's also remember except for The Beatles, not too many white artists were doing the same thing. I know Boston had an album that sold about 19 mill, the Eagles', of course sold big. KISS, Peter Frampton but his was like six million, right? In fact I don't recall no solo artist selling more than TWO MILLION copies of a single album prior to "Songs..." (unless I'm mistaken) and that was Elvis, Marvin and Stevie and probably Johnny Mathis. [Edited 7/18/09 9:01am] [Edited 7/18/09 9:02am]

You notice most of the big blockbuster-selling albums happened around the 1970s? Even when the Beatles were selling all those records, they were releasing double albums.
Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and the Eagles were among the first groups to sell more than ten million copies of single albums. [Edited 7/18/09 12:11pm]

Another thing I noticed is the media is hyping up the Off The Wall and Thriller album more than the others. Actually they've always done this. A few of my friends brought his albums that they heard were good, and were dissapointed with Off The Wall as I think most young people will be. I encouraged them to get the better albums 'Bad' and 'Dangerous', and as I expected they liked them more. I don't think Off The Wall is hooky enough for the young kids of today.
Agreed, "OFF THE WALL" would just be a retro disco album to the kids today, the tuff snares and new jack beats of "BAD" and "DANGEROUS" would be more their speed. "OFF THE WALL" is simply a well crafted soul and R&B album - brilliant, without the crossover appeal of "THRILLER", but a smoother listen (IMHO). I'm trying to remember "new jack beats" & "tuff snares" on that album. This sentence made my eyes strain out of my head Maybe I'm just not remembering it well, God know's I haven't listened to it since it was out

Thanks for confirming that, b/c I don't remember anything sounding like that on Bad. It was rather weak instrumentally, even the title song (which was supposed to bang, I guess) never really hits. It just never breaks the Casio keyboard mode... Dangerous had some thump to it but most of it (possibly all) didn't age well... Off the Wall is such a great album b/c like you said - it's timeless. Someone musically inclined could explain it better, but it's just more straightforward. There's a simplicity, there's great melodies, there's an energy about it that just feels really good.

Yeah, and the turned up blazer collar, and the cloth the blazer is made out of, the color combination (bright red and powder blue?! YIKES!) And even the rounded collar is very 80's. If it had a white collar on a stripped shirt, it'd give it away even more. The eyes and nose are his, and perhaps the mouth. It looks more like a cousin or something.

You named both that I'd missed. I know SITKOL was released before platinum and diamond awards so not sure how that was counted. Never in to Hammer, so that one got by me. How could I have missed Whitney Houston?! I remember that Outkast's 'Speakerboxx/The Love Below' shot to 10 million copies in just a few months after release. I don't remember the exact day, but I will never forget watching some entertainment news program and hearing the announcer say, "Outkast has gone diamond with their latest album. One of the first rap/hip-hop albums in history to reach this feat." I remember this not because it was a hip-hop album selling that many copies; no, I remember it because I had a total Jessica Simpson moment. I totally thought out loud and said, "What the fuck is 'diamond'?" Knew what 'platinum' was; knew what 'gold' was; but, no idea of what 'diamond' meant, not a clue. When I learned what it meant (sad I know), I just couldn't believe that an album could actually legally sell that many copies in such a short period of time, especially being from that musical genre. Total dumbass moment. [Edited 7/18/09 16:23pm] Prince Rogers Nelson

That's a skinny tie and afro mullet too. I have no idea what they altered in the photo outside of adding a moustache They added the bags under his eyes. Michael totally flipped the script on their asses. All that picture is missing is a briefcase and one of those old school cell phones...ya know the one's that looked like bricks with antennas and illuminated touchtone keypads. Prince Rogers Nelson

This sentence made my eyes strain out of my head Maybe I'm just not remembering it well, God know's I haven't listened to it since it was out I listened to it, there WAS no "new jack beats" or "tuff snares". I heard keyboard programming, drum programming, some noise that used to be "revolutionary" back then. Don't take away that the album is good. But "Off the Wall" is more timeless to me. There were plenty of snares on "BAD", the new jack beats were in reference to "DANGEROUS".

Agreed, "OFF THE WALL" would just be a retro disco album to the kids today, the tuff snares of "BAD" and new jack beats of "DANGEROUS" would be more their speed. "OFF THE WALL" is simply a well crafted soul and R&B album - brilliant, without the crossover appeal of "THRILLER", but a smoother listen (IMHO). There u go, corrected.

Well I can see where you'll find snares in "Bad". I think new jack swing is more dated than disco tho. DISCO has had, and will always have, a longer lifespan than NJS, people still have retro/disco dress up parties, and you know "BLAME IT ON THE BOOGIE" and "DON'T STOP TIL YOU GET ENOUGH" are staples. NEW JACK SWING had a shorter life, ain't too many retro new jack parties that I know of, it was cool in it's day, but just didn't have the worldwide cultural impact that DISCO had. So in that prognosis, and IMHO - "OFF THE WALL" will be 'more' remembered than "DANGEROUS"... let the debating begin.
