I believe dude is a trained opera singer....that should give him a solid four octaves. But you probably already realized that by listening to the cd.

Is a 4 octave range rare? Wasn't that Minnie Riperton's range?

She had a 5.5 octave range.

If the highest note you can sing is an F in the octave in question, that's approximately half that octave.
You don't get the rest of the octave as a bonus. smile

Most reports have her "rounded down" to 5.

I'm still confused. How many octaves can one person sing and does that have any bearing on if you are considered a tenor, soprano, etc. How many octaves does P sing?

A visual example would be the best way to understand this...

Looking at the "Human Voice" area of the graphic gives you a breakdown by vocal type (soprano, alto, etc).
Singers with multi-octave ranges are generally able cover a couple of those categories.

From any note, C for example, to the next C on the keyboard is one octave.

Don't have a clue what Prince's vocal range is.

P is at 5? That's a good range, right? Is Mariah really 8 octaves?

Prince was rated at the highest I believe at 5.
There is not such thing as 8. Isn't 5 the highest?
