nod However, the whole "how much BO revenue will this person generate" doesn't just relate to "music stars".

I think she's right. The film, TV, music, etc. industries have long since cared about money as much as -- and often more than -- the integrity of the respective crafts. It'll change only when audiences become more discriminating, and we stop supporting garbage just because it features a "star"... but too many of us have just lost any sense of taste. shrug

At the same time, Nia can't front like everyone doesn't hustle. She's directed videos and I'm almost certain she's done fashion spreads... when there must be better skilled unknown directors out there, and models have complained for years that actresses are taking their gigs.

Tinseltown Talk: Nia Long Lashes Out At Music Stars Who Act

"If you're a singer not an actress, you should sing. If you're a rapper, you should rap," is what actress Nia Long told the U.K. magazine Pride.

In the July issue cover story written by Jessica Huie, the 'Are We There Yet?' star was also asked what she thought about Beyonce Knowles' performance in 'Obsessed.'

"I didn't see 'Obsessed,' so I can't comment, but it's just not about how talented you are anymore. It's about, 'How much box-office revenue will this person generate?' When you see certain people – we won't name names – they just don't have the skill, and no one in their team has said, 'You need acting classes,'" Long replied.

The 38-year-old actress, who last starred on the ABC series 'Big Shots,' does believe there have been some exceptions in Hollywood.

"If you take time to develop your craft, God bless you. Jamie Foxx is an example of both [actor and singer]," she added.

Long also vented to the glossy about the quality of roles Hollywood offers Black actresses.

"If you were able to take all the Black actresses and the choices we've made collectively, it's a pure reflection of what you see on film. People need to work. But the content? The opportunities for Black actresses are more widespread today, but the quality has suffered," she offered.

-I think she makes some valid points here. She probably feels that rappers and singers are taking all the roles and it's already hard enough for black actors to find work so I agree with her in that sense. At the same time, there are musicians who happen to be good actors, so I don't see why someone should have to limit themselves just because they're a singer or rapper- whatever the case may be. I definitely see where she's coming from though. It must be frustrating.

Damn Nia Long is hating on Beyonce!

I remember Samuel Jackson talking about this a few years back and
he noted there were a select few like Will Smith who paid their dues and
low and behold the great Oscar nominee Mekhi Phifer chose to
take exception saying he didn't want to hear no grown man crying
about rappers acting. Mekhi stated that rappers were some of the most
passionate actors he's ever worked with. I thought Mekhi was out of line
taking on the power black actor who's worked hard and paid his dues
and was just kissing ass so he could be in the next rap video with lots of bouncing asses.

What was Mekhi nominated for?

Well, the reason why this intelligent, talented, funny and beautiful black actress is not known is because the ONLY work she could find these days is in the “chitlin’ circuit” plays such as this...

This is a sad reality, black actresses & actors in general are having a rough time,,,,at least Angela & Nia could find solace in TV but the rest of the majority are either doing "gospel plays", doing "Tyler Perry" movies and ALOT of others gave up on the hollywood dream and started doing the 9-5 thing.

The only famous black names are Halle, Denzel, Will and Eddie,,,,,and they'll hound you with those 5 untill you throw up,,,so don't expect variety any time soon.

Dear God eek I have to admit I'm not incredibly familiar w/ Gina's work, & unfortunately I'm not surprised to see Vanessa Bell Calloway on this b/c she's "older" & you know how they do when mf's age. But to see Roger Guinevere Smith in this shit??? Alongside a complete, no talent newbie (Jazmine Lewis)??? It's tragic all around...

Nia is absolutely right. Think of the number of films Bey has under her belt & can't act for SHIT after all this time. With her it's all about people wanting to see her (for whatever reason) & spend the $, it's never about the quality of the work or who's actually the best actress for the job at hand. It's really sickening. As much as I love Common I still wonder how he gets parts - I could barely understand his ass in Terminator 4. EMOTE, mf! lol & now The Game gets to plaster his oatmeal lookin' mug everywhere, he's in something. & let's not forget 50's ridiculous ass. The list goes on, the shit ain't right exclaim

Ironically the first time I was aware of Nia Long was because of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.....in case she forgot, a show where the main character was played by a Grammy-winning rapper. Will was also an exec producer of the show IIRC.

95% of music stars who act do not deserve the roles they get. This is not going to change anytime soon.

To THAT!!! Its SADDER when you see him act in it, he's doing this "southern drunken" role that reminds me of ol' Amos & Andy routines.

Still, I won't knock a brother's hustle,,,,,he probably knocked on EVERY agency for work and that must've been the only thing he could find.

So, because Will Smith has created a body of work that makes him more an actor that rapper now, she can't talk about the overall climate of the industry? confused Because in case YOU forgot, Will Smith hasn't made any music (that wasn't for one of his cheesy films) is quite a while...

I can't blame Nia for making these remarks because there probably aren't alot of jobs going around in Hollywood right now for actual black actresses. It has to suck when you lose a role to a singer who can easily make money by just going on tour instead of getting handed a part in the film because they already have established fanbases and they end up being terrible in the movie.

I have no problem with singers who want to act and actors who want to sing, except if they suck at the new venture. I like Mos Def as an actor; and, also Mark Walberg (he started out as a rapper), Janet Jackson, and some of Justin Timberlake's films ('Alpha Dog' was actually really good and he's great on SNL nod ). I think it's harder for actors who try to become singers really. Jamie Foxx has been singing since 'In Living Color', and always had a nice voice, but he needs to calm down just a tad with the music and get back to comedy. Beyonce can't act, unless you consider being yourself while a camera is filming you to be acting. I refuse to go see any of her films because I want them to flop so she'll stop 'acting'...or whatever it is that she thinks she's doing in her films. Unfortunately, some people are making her believe that she's a good actress by paying to see her in theaters, so she won't stop until she gets that Oscar....sucks monkey balls for real. disbelief sad

clapping she's clearly talking about Beyonce without saying it here, but Bee's not the only one though she is a major example in Nia's statement here. I do agree whole heartedly with her, its not about quality anymore in Hollywood, which is sad, its all about box office draw.
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.
