They should do a duet together! Teena gotta pass that torch sooner or later!

I'd like to know how does a British person have a country twang accent in their voice when they sing??? hmmm

I think Joss Stone is okay but won't be another teena marie.
Teena Marie is a writer, producer, arranger, and musician.
Joss Stone more than likely won't be those things.
Thanks Rips her 2 shreds for Midnight Magnet. I never even
heard of the Robbery album before the org. I believe it
was her final motown album and it might have been a case of
it not being properly promoted. Have to check that album out.
Yes i love Teena and have even seen her perform well often
but Yes that If i were a Bell performance
was awful. She's Lady T so she's entitled to one misstep. lol

Frankly, I don't think Teena Marie should be the standard to which anyone aspires. I've NEVER understood why people go all ga ga for her. disbelief Listening to her and Rick James sing is like watching Cephus and Reesie on In Living Color.

Joss? She's still wet. Give her 10 years to hone her voice, and the soul that'll come with the ups and downs of an adult life she's yet to lead, and she may sing circles around Reesie... er... Teena. rolleyes

omfg You haven't heard the right Teena songs, lemme assure you. I'm a selective Teena fan, but once you get into the song you like you really fall in love love Fire & Desire is nowhere near her best:

If none of these hit you, you'z deaf lol She has some good shit nod
heart prince I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! Thank you for being YOU - my little Princey, the best to EVER do it prince heart

No,it wasn't her final Motown album,it was actually her first album for Epic Records.Released in the fall of 1983,it features three hit singles:

"Fix It,Baby"
"Midnight Magnet"
"Stop The World"

It received alot of promotion and airplay back in late 1983/early 84.There was even a video for the title track, which never became a single. It's one of her best albums, imo. The uptempo jams are funky, and the slow jams/ballads are soulful and heartfelt. The latin-flavored tearjerker "Stop The World" is one of my favorite Teena Marie songs.

Black radio embraced Teena for her VOICE, nobody knew what color she was when she first came out, only that she was Rick James's protege.
And when it was discovered she was white, black radio still embraced her.

In my opinion, Joss fakes the funk. Teena is the real deal.

THANKYOU!

I do have a couple of Teena Marie's greatest hits/best of packages. My wife actually bought them for me as a birthday gag. They're like having Weird Al Yankovic albums. lol

Out of respect for you, though, I will listen to this mess and reassess. rolleyes

Comparing is imo limiting oneself in order to be more openminded by letting artists grow in their own right.

That said, i've heard before that Joss sometimes forced her voice by straining which resulted in cancellation of shows. Hope she took care of that.

Thanks. I actually saw that last night after i logged out and
listened to Robbery online. It's amazing i had never heard of this
album before. I listened to it and i felt a few songs were okay but
it wasn't enough to move me to buy it but i did buy It Must Be Magic
for $4.58. This one is tops for me along with Starchild as far as
her classic albums. I will have to check out Robbery again.

That may be the coldest shit I've ever read lol I get it though - I have a friend who's really into Teena & for the longest time I thought, "how can she listen to all that wailing??" But I hadn't heard the right songs to fall in love w/ what she can do. There are some Teena classics that I still don't get - Cassanova Brown is one, I'm not wit it. BUT the ones I mentioned really do showcase a power & sweetness in her voice, & a command of the material at hand. She crafts it, & at times she's kind of amazing exclaim

If any of the following are on your albums, check them out:

Yes, Indeed
Tune In Tomorrow
I'm Gonna Have My Cake (and Eat It Too)
You Make Love Like Springtime
Portuguese Love

btw: Joss will never be able to do what Nikka does at the 3:45 mark...she just wasn't born with the soul...some things can't be taught.

Stone will always sound like a poser cause that's what she is.
