Why is an instrument necessary for expressing musical talent? I ask this because I had an argument with one of my friends the other day who's a "beatmaker" disbelief and he told me that everything you can do with an instrument can be done in the studio, and tried to argue with me that an instruments unneccessary. I was actually stumped. BUt I'm hoping you guys can help me form my argument so I can verbally kick his ass tomorrow cool

THAT is why Prince gripes about ProTools (although it has its place at times), and "Real Music By Real Musicians". I have to side w/ Prince on that one. Creating sounds in a studio and not using instruments is NOT talent, and not being a musician. It's being a computer geek.

People thought of Trent Reznor like that a lot early on; he described himself as a computer geek with music. He's since proved he can play and write. The computer becomes an instrument as well. Just like a drum machine. Prince can or cannot choose to use a Linn. It's an enhancement, not a requirement. If your pal had no computer in the studio other than to simply record music on, what would he do? He couldn't create sounds, create loops, or whatever, what would he do? People used to say that if Prince had nothing but a comb and a jug, he'd still try to make music. The computer has killed the musicians of the world.

So Prince uses a drum machine as an enhancemnt(to make better) over a "gasp" human? All of those drummers he singing about in OlSkoolCompany and the song is over a "gasp" drum loop..All of those synths he use and his keyboardist use are "gasp" sounds created in a studio. It's not a requirement?..true but I think it was for When Doves Cry, Sign o The Times , all of 1999 and so on.If not he wouldnt have done it.Maybe it his whole gemini/contradiction thing. But anyway, yes its true that with the right equipment and sound card a musician wouldnt be needed..it is what it is.Also i agree theres nothing like a live band. But based on what im reading so many genres would be under the file "talentless" Rap,R&B,House,Electronica,Trance,Dancehall,Reggaetone,Pop and all Dj's and thats not fair...there is room for all types of music old school and new in this big world...guess what guys...the world is round

"Prince can or cannot choose to use a Linn. It's an enhancement, not a requirement."-That's you right? maybe im reading it wrong..I tend to overthink as u know..lol

Never said that either.
But u did make a comment about real musicians and creating sounds on a computer isnt real talent..well most real musicians use synth keyboards the have computer generated sounds

But based on what I'm reading so many genres would be under the file "talentless" Rap, R&B, House, Electronica, Trance, Dancehall, Reggaetone, Pop and all Dj's and that's not fair...there is room for all types of music old school and new in this big world...guess what guys...the world is round

And you called them talentless..then you must make that statement for all of the other producers who employ the same method of making music. That "Ray of Light" album was awesome for some talentless computer geeks. And I'll say it again (to honor this thread) Most of the rappers today are verbally horrible but when it comes to production and all electronic music, I will always disagree..thnx

But what if some orgers are telling the truth?

Let's be honest, some of the old-school rap songs were borderline sexist, homophobic (maybe anti-gay is more like it), and racist in the name of good old shock value.

And the sad part about it is that sometimes they were funny (if you understand dark comedy on a level of Pulp Fiction/Andrew Dice Clay sort of way).

Rap music died when Tupac, Biggie, Erik B and Rakim, and those guys stopped making legitimate music.

The bullshit artists that have come in the past 12 years are beyond ridiculous, horrible, insane, un-listenable, vapid, empty, soulless, unoriginal and downright offensive.

This is TRUTH.
IMO, Tupac was the last of the great rappers. Much respect to the others mentioned above, but Pac was my favorite.

There is tons of offensive rap but being offensive isn't it's main problem. It's main problem is it's weak sounding, rhythmless, and dull. And even that could be forgiven if it hadn't created an entire world of rhythmless dull asses that won't let it either die or go back underground so the folks that can actually throwdown can come back above ground.

Did I say "all" rap? Where did I say that in my post? Yeah, you can find good rap. Hell, you have to go waaaaay back to the very early 80s, but other than those very early years, the majority of it, especially beginning in the early 90s is a bunch of slow to midtempo dull weak ass sounding shit.

Its acknowledge that those exact early 90's was rap peak years The Chronic,Low end Theory,Illmatic,Ready to Die,Enter the Wu,Fear of a black planet..Its understandable for a person to be loyal to what they grew up with when they were kids, but the 80's is a little too far back to find "good" rap..lol (Bombs Over Baghdad didnt sound midtempo to me)..It sounds like alot of people here dont like "down south rap" or houston's chop and screwed which are both musically slower (im one of them) but it should be fair to say that for ever corny, bama-ass, 8th grade level, cleaning drug money rapper that we dont like..you have talented rappers like Jay,Andre3G,Common,Lupe,Mos and many others. The problem isnt the songs but which songs are put on the radio a million times a day and which videos are contantly played..thats another story on a whole other level. Or just listen to "dumb it down" by Lupe Fiasco for the cliffnotes

Thats not the TRUTH..its YOUR OPINION (and his also) and thats respected..but i've mentioned some rappers that have kept rap music alive and well..maybe its a generational gap thats goin on here cuz guys are completely dismissing decades of great songs.
