As for his comment, well, there's truth to it, even if it sounds a bit immodest to say. I think MJ was touched with megalomania, though, so I kinda take what he says with a grain of salt.

The beauty of Prince, to me, is he clearly wasn't a video artist, yet he found a way to stay relevant and flourish in an era where video ruled the day. "Purple Rain" really helped him out in that regard, as it felt revolutionary and cutting edge--one long video to enhance the music. It made Prince feel hipper in regards to video, than he turned out to be. lol It frustrated me to see him poot out these lame videos made in warehouses or lots at Paisley Park ("Kiss" is the exception for me..that video was so simple and playful, just hot!) But concentrating on the music above all else served him will in the end, I think.

this is a really disappointing thread. everyone sitting around waiting for the fireworks to start and it's not happening.

HE is the one that kicked the doors open, that allowed Prince to come through! IMHO, there would have been no Prince had there not been, a Michael Jackson! I think Prince would've had a career in music regardless of video or MTV. In fact, I wonder if he would have flourished even more if the "video age" never occurred and all there was to rely on was radio. Because Prince, to me, was not a video artist. The best videos were simply taken from the movie "Purple Rain," which worked because the movie was so popular. That's how I remember it. But, like I said, in the end, I think keeping his focus on the music served him well.

Besides, there were a LOT of acts putting out really sub-par videos at the time and Prince's come off suprisingly classy in comparison to most of them

MTV was just a channel that promoted videos for kids. Back then they tried to push that rock format but MTV was barely functioning. Prince and MJ were having hit records crossing over to pop radio almost at the same time. It was even harder to get on so-called "rock radio" if you were black or pop/R&B-based. MJ, Prince and Tina Turner were some of the only acts to get rock play (mainly Prince and Tina...even rock radio plays Bob Marley every now and then and he's reggae). I think what people fail to realize is that what MJ did was give MTV revenue and money. That's the barrier he broke. There were already some black artists on MTV before MJ but Michael used mini-films with choreography and entertainment value, which was something Elvis & the Beatles had done with musical movies. He brought the musical mini-film to MTV. But Prince didn't really need MTV to become as popular as he did. Prince broke through because he adapted a more edgier and controversial figure compared to MJ. Plus he used BIG SCREEN FILM to get his music to a wider audience, MJ never did that. As much as either would admit they influence the other, it's too much to think that MJ would influence someone to make music videos since MJ's videos were always unlike other films. People have tried the mini-film video format after MJ (Madonna, Janet, etc.) but Prince almost NEVER did it and if he did, as I said, he used it to promote his music whereas Michael's videos were made for national events, lol. Mothafuckas left school to watch the damn "Thriller" video and stayed up past their bedtime to watch "Black or White" (shit I know I did and the video debuted on a Thursday!). I don't remember any pop star black or white doing that before or since.

Prince's videos have always been "interesting" (but then again the videos actually made me a fan for some reason).

But yeah MJ, Madonna & George always had the bomb-ass videos.

Now THIS is the ONE! He paved the way for everybody. He laid down the blueprint that others followed. Everyone from The Beatles (who they themselves cop to that he highly influenced them) to Jimi Hendrix (who cemented in Jimi's mind that it was truly cool to truly be free visually as well as musically AFTER Jimi was no longer Richard's sideman! Of course not while Jimi was playing in Richard's band: "I'm the ONLY one allowed to be pretty! Jimmy James...button up those sleeves!...Whooooo!" Richard on Jimi..."He played it sooooo good.
