Comparing D'Angelo to Michael Jackson is like comparing Melissa Morgan
to Chaka Khan. eek
And yes Michael Jackson was a musical genius. His body of work speaks for
itself. 1969 and on.

I wouldn't call him a musical genius simply because I include instrumentation/producing as a criterion for Musical Genius and MJ wasn't adept in that aspect. However, he IS a marketing/entertainment genius - hands down.

I hear ya but Micheal was one of those cats that had an ear for
instrumentation. Micheal could conceive an idea in his head and
say hey i want the music to sound like this and write the lyrics
to it and bam it was magic.

Yeahhhhh...but still...I wouldn't deem him a MUSICAL genius.

What, in your opinion, makes Michael Jackson more of a genius than D´Angelo ?

Serious question. I don´t consider either of them a genius by any stretch of the imagination but what in particular makes MJ a genius,in your opinion ?

DON'T TALK ABOUT MICHAEL JACKSON!!!!!

Well, now, an artist could put out a SINGLE genius piece of work, but that doesn't make the artist a "musical genius". Like I said, genius isn't hitting once or twice.

This is a symptom of our time. Why the thought of calling Mr. Voodoo a genuis would even cross anyones mind is beyond me. I like his music but he's a long way from being considered a genuis. I think this speaks to the dearth of musical talent on the scene these days that this question can even be formulated.

A couple of decades ago D'angelo would be one of many artists putting out quality soul music. Now they stick out like sore thumbs. If D'agelo was a genuis the music would pore out of him like water. Genuis is driven and surprising. He is niether of those things.

I think D has his own sound. I can pick out one of his songs in a heartbeat and to me, his sound is very different from his neo soul contemporaries, Maxwell, Bilal and Musiq

To me, most of his stuff sounds like a copycat of Prince's "Adore" but much weaker sounding.

NO! Love the guys music however.I think his vocals are the tightest in R&B as of the last 14 years and counting (along with Mawell) No musical genius but I haven't been really empressed by anyone else since D'angelo.

Gotta throw Rahsaan Patterson and Bilal in there with that group.

Yikes. I think you're overestimating D's vocals and underestimating Bilal and Rahsaan.
