No, quantity IS a factor. It's not the ONLY factor but it IS definitely a factor. You can't put out just ONE album and it be the greatest album ever and be considered a genius. At that point, you're just a 1-hit Wonder.

Musical Genius is a mixture of: Quality, Amount of Quality Outpout, Pioneering/Trailblazing/Revolutionizing, and Longevity.

Musical genius has nothing to do with being prolific, I agree. I mean, I could be wrong, but isn't Robert Johnson considered a musical genius and isn't his output rather paltry?

No, it DOES have something to do with being prolific. That' part of a person BEING genius.

I saw him in concert in Hamburg in 2001 ( or 2000?) and I´ve been following his career from day one. The concert was great and I love almost all of his songs and still believe in him but I wouldn´t really consider him a genius. Sure, he´s very good and talented but that does not equal genius. Being a genius means much more than that.

That being said, he is one of the most underrated musicians right now and people focus too much on his personal tragedies, mock him, make fun of him and the way his body looks these days but, and I´ve said this before, give him a couple of weeks in the gym, some quality time somewhere far away to get some inspiration, and he´ll be back and he´ll be stronger and better than ever before.
Dude is too talented to be written off yet.He just had a very long streak of bad luck.

I don't know if he's perceived as being underrated as much as he's perceived as being "absent". And I think that's what the complaint is on him.

I think D has his own sound. I can pick out one of his songs in a heartbeat and to me, his sound is very different from his neo soul contemporaries, Maxwell, Bilal and Musiq

I disagree. He may have a distinctive vocal but I don't see him being as distinctive as say Prince or Teddy Riley.

I may be wrong, but hasn't D produced and written a lot of music for other artists during his "absence"? Roy Hargrove's Hard grooves album comes to mind, which is a brilliant record that has D's handwriting all over it.

I don't know what's considered "a lot" but as an artist he's been absent.

I don't deny that. But he has been around, doing work with Q-Tip, Common, Snoop, Hargrove, Questlove ... but I'd agree that his own output is too limited to be able to call him a musical genius. I think he has potential, and sometimes personal issues can get in the way of creative expression, even if you're a genius. Bottom line, I agree that he hasn't released enough music on his own to come to that conclusion.

If he had released maybe 4 or 5 CD that were all very, very good, then this would be a valid discussion.

There's not enough material of him to call him a genius just yet.

He's a musically gifted cat but I won't go that far since he only put out two albums as an artist. True he did prolific work behind the scenes but he hasn't been what I considered "vital". He's just sorta been here and there - like Shuggie.

I have to cringe when someone labels MJ or Prince one, they are all very talented performers. D'Angelo is terrific too.
To me a genius is Einstein, Da Vinci, Mozart.

Making my booty shake can be considered genius too, but I dunno.

No, but he has released what I consider the best R&B album of the decade in both the '90s and '00s.

What, in your opinion, makes Michael Jackson more of a genius than D´Angelo ?

Serious question. I don´t consider either of them a genius by any stretch of the imagination but what in particular makes MJ a genius,in your opinion ?

Comparing D'Angelo to Michael Jackson is like comparing Melissa Morgan
to Chaka Khan. eek
And yes Michael Jackson was a musical genius. His body of work speaks for
itself. 1969 and on.

I wouldn't call him a musical genius simply because I include instrumentation/producing as a criterion for Musical Genius and MJ wasn't adept in that aspect. However, he IS a marketing/entertainment genius - hands down.
