I didn't cry, but I KNEW I couldn't handle Katherine going up on stage knowing about Brandon. Looking at her was hard in the front row but heartening watching the kids leaning on her like I used to do w/ my great-grandma.

i actually thought everyone was great, and i'm not a big fan of most of the people who performed. it was amazing to see mariah actually singing with feelings - i didn't even care that her voice was cracking, it just made her performance all the more real to me. even stevie and lionel had a gravity and a realness to their performances that i'd never seen from them in all the years of awards show and televised concert performances. there was a different quality to everyone today, and it was very touching and intense to me.

and the beginning when there was the long awkward pause when nobody knew what was going on...how could a stadium full of THAT MANY PEOPLE be so silent for so long? it was pretty amazing to me.

Much of this was like an old time good old funeral at a church. I was surprised at how much it was like they just continued the funeral at the memorial, but I loved it and thought it was a wonderful thing for the world to see. There's alot of joy and sorrow openly mixed at Black funerals (as well as great hats ), but emotions are #1.

And I know we don't know who the mother of Blanket is, but I couldn't help to think of his mother, somewhere in the world, watching him. Feeling not only his pain, but the pain of not being able to approach the child as a mother. Pit o the gut.

I'm relieved that the service went well and was done with dignity. I was fearing the worst. I was kind of surprised to see the coffin there but I think it could have been a decoy. Mike may have been laid to rest early this morning when everyone else was at Staples.

Marlon, Jemaine and Paris had me shedding tears and the montage of old family photos was very moving. At one point they showed a photo of young Katherine, who was even more beautiful than her lovely daughters.

I hope Marlon's wish comes true and I hope that Mike's precious kids will continue getting the care and nurturing they need to thrive. It would be good for them to remember what Rev. Al told them today.
