Imitation is a form of flattery.

Good artists borrow, great artists "steal".

Always remember that, folks. wink

please give michael the credit he deserves, thriller was written by rod temperton, michael jackson had nothing to do with the lyrics or music in the song thriller

The post is from a quote from Brian Banks (synthesizers). I think its common knowledge Michael Jackson didn't write Thriller. When the song came into the studio, MJ wanted the Synth's to be really punchy - Like 1999.

Sounded pretty straight forward to me. Just interesting, that's all.

I think that was Quincy who said that

Interesting reading, here's the snippet about Prince...

Brian Banks (synthesizers) "It was late in the evening one night when we were working, and Quincy came to us. We all knew how ‘Thriller’ was going – they were trying to get Vincent Price, they were doing all this stuff – but he wanted this huge chord sequence."

He said, “There's this sound that I've got in my head. There's this underground, this new artist, that nobody's ever really heard of but he's great, he's hot, he's got this great song.” And he pulled out the album and it was Prince, '1999'. And you know the opening sound on that? Duh-da da, dur-duh-duh? Well, that was the sound – that big, bitey chord sound at the opening of '1999' – he wanted that, but bigger, for ‘Thriller’."

Oh and Michael's "HO!" obviously copies from Prince's "AOOOWAH!!"..... rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes ....as Timmy said, its a form of flattery.

'Street Songs' was the album that kicked my career up to it's highest level. After it hit so big, Quincy Jones told me he borrowed the bass line for 'Give It To Me Baby' for Micheal Jackson's 'Thriller'" Rick James 1994

Thanks for bringing up that quote. People have to understand that just because someone borrow a line or two does not make an album less great than it is.

He may have used 1999 as a keyboard inspiration, but to me a lot of Thriller (the song) was a rehash of Off The Wall - especially the "laughing/howling" people intro.

I think the instrumental passage of DSTYGE is HIGHLY similiar to Thriller.

That's so dumb. The report is already false because Rod Temperton wrote "Thriller", not MJ. Rod also wrote "Off The Wall" and "Rock With You".

You wanna know what sounds like "1999" ? ? ? Go listen to Phil Collins' "Sussudio". Wanna know who ripped off "One More Chance" from The Jackson's Victory album? Go listen to Phil Collins' "One More Night".

Rod wrote secen official songs for MJ, and then there's Hot Street and Groove Of The Midnight.

it's probably the negative 'MJ stole from Prince' tone of it that keeps it alive.

Rod Temperton, the Heatwave alumnus who wrote "Rock With You"and "Lady In My Life" also wrote "Thriller". You must have known that prior to posting this incredibly illuminating thread. confused

Dang... I have 2 say that Michael looked his best at that time....he's rocking the androgynous look...The pretty/handsome look that was so popular then. Prince just kept his very pretty/handsome look. IMO
