I haven't participated in these threads apart from posting the news item about MJ's bodyguard. My first memory of Michael Jackson is actually from when I was either three or four years old and before Thriller came on there was an announcer saying that the following video was not intended for young children so I couldn't watch it. Then later I remember watching the Bad video, the premiere of the Black & White video and I got a small glimpse of the Michael mania when I was in London in August '92 at the same time as MJ was there.
However I never really got into his music until about 5 years ago, the same time I got into Prince's music. Before that I couldn't see past his public image and all the weirdness and scandals. I was very much shocked when I heard the news on the radio about MJ's death. I was working a night shift at the time and while it was a relatively busy night, after I had finished my assigments I was glued to the computer, checking out all the news sites for details about this. While I never felt a strong emotional connection to MJ's music I felt kinda numb the first few days after the news broke. I never expected to be this affected by the death of a person who I had never met, who had never been to my country and lived far, far away from my home. On a sidenote, are there any Jackson5 or solo MJ compilations that y'all would recommend? I have most of the stuff from MJ's adult solo career, but I don't have much from his earlier work, except the tracks that appeared on the Ultimate Collection. (the Sony box set, NOT the Jackson 5 set) [Edited 7/5/09 10:52am]

In this economy, are people really going to travel from far and wide, take time from work, spend money on hotels etc. all with one days notice to go to a memorial for a musician-even Michael Jackson? I know he has super fans but I just don’t see this really happening. It takes nothing to register on the website for the lottery, but showing up is a whole different story.
That's true. We have to see...

Remember that they would have been loading out Madonna's set as they were loading in MJ's set at the O2. Somehow, I'm glad she did this... I was a tween when Michael, Madonna, and Prince blew up simultaneously on the international pop stage, beckoning in the mtv generation and giving birth to pop culture's Generation X.... although as an adult I stopped paying close attention to the music or press from any of them long ago, there is something very poignant in seeing Madonna pay tribute to her peer from that era when I was young...it was undoubtedly an era which changed the face of the music business in terms of numbers and marketing, but it was also the tail end of full on artists giving 110%, and their very best to us, being of independent creative thought and ideas (even for pop). While we were entering into the numbers game and the realm of video killed the radio star, these crazy kids were bursting not only with ambition, but concepts, ideas, and there was still a romanticism and existentialism about what they were doing as entertainment personalities. Michael was climbing trees and parading around with monkeys in Captain Crunch suits, Prince was giving primal screams in trenchcoats and stilettoes, and Madonna was crawling around on stages in bridal attire topped with lingerie asking us if we saw her as the virginal mother or the whore. It was a very special time to be a teen in pop music. I dare say none of our contemporary acts can touch what they did. I'm glad old hagley Madge paid tribute. In some odd way it's like it brings a sort of closure to my pop music childhood. That era is long passed, long gone.

BaileyWalker said: I was looking at the Quincy interview again and something stuck out, ok we know his vocal talents went way downhill, enough so that he had to lip sync most of the time in public.
Was 1986 the starting point to this? From the Quincy Interview: He told Details magazine: "He'd come up with, 'Man, I promise you I have this disease,' and so forth, and 'I have a blister on my lungs,' and all that kind of bulls**t. It's hard, because Michael's a Virgo, man - he's very set in his ways. You can't talk him out of it. "A Blister on your lungs" wouldn't have anything to do with this skin tone? That sounds like an excuse for this singing ability back in 1986? Erm, huh? How does one's talent go away? Once talented, always talented. MJ was always a brilliant singer and vocalist right up until the end. Despite the lip synching, he always had a beautiful voice. Your talent can't just dissapair like that. That is absolutely ridiculous. "And When The Groove Is Dead And Gone, You Know That Love Survives, So We Can Rock Forever" RIP MJ

The longterm use of abusing prescription meds
can damage your health badly! Now I am starting to understand Joe's easy going behavior, especially if Michael's health was in POOR condition for a while! I believe Michael knew he was gonna die and so did his family. Michael Jackson Had Complained of Chest Pains Weeks Ago
June 26, 2009 by: Bridget Daly Michael Jackson Image by wenn.com A friend of Michael Jackson’s has come forward to say that they aren’t surprised by his death. This comes as a shock since the entire world feels like it came out of the blue. But to this particular friend, it was not. The source who remains unnamed tells Radar that Michael had been suffering from cardiac problems for weeks leading up to his death. The source says, I last saw Michael on June 16th and he told me then he wasn’t well. He told me, ‘I haven’t been feeling well lately. I am having problems with my chest’. He touched his chest as he said it, indicating to me he was having heart trouble. It was also visibly obvious that he was having trouble breathing. He was so very, very slim that last day I saw him. And his hands were extremely dry and scaly. It was like he had severe psoriasis. I loved Michael but I was sadly not surprised by the news of his passing. This is so scary that no one knew about this except for his close friends. Michael was always a very private person, so we understand why he wouldn’t want to disclose too much information to the public. But it’s still so sad to hear about it after the fact. I don't know if this is the truth, but if Michael was having problems, he should have gotten help earlier. [Edited 7/5/09 11:56am]

Sharpton Wants Michael Jackson Commemorative Stamp July 5, 2009 Link The Rev. Al Sharpton, who will speak this morning at the First AME Church in Los Angeles, is calling on the U.S. Postal Service to issue a stamp in honor of Michael Jackson. But getting a Jackson stamp could be difficult. According to the New York Daily News, the U.S. Postal Service usually considers memorial stamp requests five years after the subject's death. The post office gets more than 50,000 requests for commemorative stamps annually, according to the USPS. A representative for the post office could not immediately be reached for comment. Sharpton has emerged as an adviser to the Jackson family in the wake of the pop star's death. He met with Jackson's father, Joe, last week at the family's Encino compound to discuss memorial arrangements and other issues. Sharpton last week had suggested a global, multi-city memorial for the pop star.

"It is so hard to express in words what Michael Jackson meant to me. He was my friend. He was one of the reasons I got into the music business. He inspired me. He taught me. He laughed with me. He paved the way for African American artists to be played on MTV which was huge. My heart is full of grief for his family and his children and I pray that they take solace in the incredible legacy of his music and art."

THE JACKSONS THRIVE The show must go on! Michael Jackson's siblings are reuniting to take over their beloved brother's show, using 100 hours of the pop king's rehearsal-video footage as the show-stopper centerpiece to their live tribute performances. THE POST'S ONGOING JACKO COVERAGE Sisters Janet and La Toya, who were never part of the Jackson 5 kid band, said they would probably join the family act on July 13, the date when the Gloved One would have opened his wildly anticipated "This Is It" concert series at London's O2 arena. "We might do the 13th or a date in August with Jan and Toya," said a family member. "We may rehearse after the funeral. It'll be good and we'll do it right for Michael." The sibling rivals -- who also include Tito, Jermaine, Jackie and Marlon -- are putting aside their differences and are working on the choreography to back up songs and dance numbers Michael already worked on. If all goes well, the Jacksons are looking to fill at least five of the 50 gigs their superstar brother was scheduled to perform on his sold-out comeback series. They are even looking at a world tour after playing at the O2 arena, a family source said. With the first concert date looming and with Jackson's memorial-service extravaganza on Tuesday, the famous siblings are racing the clock. "They're working on keeping the tour going," said another family source. Patriarch Joe Jackson, who has had patchy relationships with his kids and was cut out of Michael's will, was reportedly the one who came up with the idea. Tito Jackson, 55, who played guitar and sang as a member of the Jackson 5, was already installing a customized sound studio at his home in Calabasas, Calif., but is now building a video-editing suite. He plans to view the hours of Michael's performance videotape shot at LA's Staples Center by concert promoters AEG Live to go along with the dance routines, sets and costumes created for the show. "Michael would have wanted the show to go on and that's what we're doing. We are not giving up on Michael because Michael would not give up on his fans," a family source said. Tito has also been making midnight runs to his late brother's home in LA, loading up a U-Haul van filled with memorabilia and extra sound equipment to use in his home-studio setup, sources said. "Tito used to park his old Bentley in there. Now it's outside on the curb because the garage is so jammed," a neighbor said. Jackson matriarch Katherine, who was named as guardian of Michael's three kids, gave the OK for her children to divvy up the treasure trove of Michael's personal possessions, according to a family source. AEG Live just may make a killing out of its deal instead of having to pony up $85 million in ticket refunds. http://www.nypost.com/sev...177713.htm
