Dennis Chambers, w/ The John Scofield Band - "Trim" - Live in '86

...

This Kinda took me back in time - I forgot how much I loved this Band! Even though Jim Beard's keyboards are kinda dated now, it still makes me grin....

John Scofield - Guitar
Dennis Chambers - Drums
Gary Grainger - Bass
Jim Beard - Keyboards

From the album, "Pick Hits - Live"

From The VHS tape: Dennis Chambers - Serious Drum Moves

Trim

So You Say

Sco & Chambers (a Dynamic Duo for sure)

Gotta add some...

...Blue Matter to the mix.

Love me some Chambers. But I've NEVER been able to get into Scofield's sound. disbelief

He was the weak link, to me, on Chambers' "Outbreak" album...

Bassplayer Gary Grainger is also a Baltimore native and used to be part of the 70's funkgroup Pockets, produced by Verdine White & Robert Wright.

Maybe because of this thing...

...Ibanez CS-9 Chorus which he seems to lean on a lot.

You might want to check him out on Piety Street (for a couple of reasons): http://prince.org/msg/8/300881
More of a straight ahead sound and a minimal use of effects.

He definintely has his own "voice".
(a giant plus whether you like it or not is another story)
There is a rather "Outer Limits" approach he has in terms of his soloing concept.

Another one he's on that I like...

...Joe Henderson - So Near, So Far (Musings for Miles)

Embrace the Sco-isms. cool

That's right. Do you remember the Group The Grainger's with his brothers, they had a jam called "Shine Your Light".

I dunno know man. Sco's been the best jazz fusion guitarist I've run across since the 80s 90s etc. Probably less idiosyncratic than Metheny or Reid and he's always had an organic bluesy tone. I liked his union with Darryl "Munch" Jones in Miles' 80s bands and really dug the "Blue Matter" band with Chambers and Grainger. Greatly disheartened by him breaking up and forming new bands every 2 - 3 years. At least his great playing is consistent.

Don't get me wrong -- Scofield canplay. I just wish he'd lay off that chorus effect!!! lol Yeah, he has his own sound. Can't fault him for the signature deal. That goes a lonnnnng way in the biz, I know.

Right on ! Yeah, bought that single some years ago. Gary and his brother recorded it again for their 90's release : "Phase 1"

It's worth to check together with their second project: "Phase II" ! Good solowork and guest-musicians. Also interesting how they arranged classics such as Stevie Wonder's "Creepin" + The Brother's Johnsons "Strawberry Letter # 23".
Both albums are available at CD Baby, and in the UK they released an alternate version of "Phase II" including tracks from "Phase I".
On "Phase II" performs John Scofield too. Check his appearance on the track "Chicken Wire". Man that jam is a trip lol !

Excellent tunes indeed ! I'll check the Stairsteps version too. That's Gary right there in the front with the big afro & shades lol. Verdine White & Robert Wright did some excellent productionwork on those projects.
Some musicians have currently a myspace page. I saw one from Gary, one from the drummer and also the guitarist. The photo-albums on their site have some great promo photos of Pockets which i never saw before.

About 10 years ago i was on a weekendtrip visiting a jazzfest. On the day i started to pack getting home i made a brief visit in a cd-binstore which i passed by.
To my surprise i saw that they had the Japanese cd-reissues from all the 3 albums for sale around $ 10 omg

nod funny you should mention, the "Phase 1" disc, I ordered it online from Tower Records awhile back, and I only listen to it a couple of times, and I have no clue, of it's where about now. disbelief
