Hang on, a Neil Young thread about to drop off page one without even one reply?

Well, we can't have that.

I saw some of the Glastonbury set on tv the other day. Sadly they didn't show the whole thing, I guess you have to be there for that. He did Needle and the damage done solo, excellent as ever.

An absolutely cracking version of Rockin in the free world - it seemed like he just didn't want to end that one, 3 or 4 times they did a long finale with the usual feedback and screechy guitars, and then just after the final clash of cymbals, he'd go back to the mic and start singing it again. And he cut the guitar strings for some added noisiness on the very last, final, we're finishing the song now, this is definitely the end - honestly, finale.

It was truly epic.

They did a great version of A day in the life too.

As far as favourites of the Neil Young & Crazy Horse body of work is concerned, I'm not even sure just how much they've done together so I can only draw on that which I know - which is Ragged Glory and Weld. Favourites are cortez, fuckin up, mansion on the hill, and I've always had a soft spot for Mother Earth.

I have more interest in Neil Young's music than my current collection might lead anyone to believe. There are many albums of his that I have wanted to buy but haven't done so yet as I've always wanted to start at the beginning and work through everything. Which is a bit daft, now that I think about it, because it hasn't stopped me owning the 2 albums mentioned above, Harvest, Harvest Moon, Old Ways, two of the albums he did with CS&N (who also did their own cracking set at Glastonbury this year) and I'm sure I have one or two others as well.

I've been wanting to hear Trans properly for decades (yeah, I know most people consider it a weak point, but it's just as important to me that I listen to it along with everything else).

I better get started. biggrin
Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

Trans is worth checking out, for sure... There are a couple things on it that I really dig, although I don't listen to it that often.

He's one of my favorites. One of the few guys that can do quiet/tranquil, laid back/ grooving and fucked up/ chaotic equally well, sometimes in the same song. He is one of the most stunning elctric guitar players I've ever seen live too, really burns the candle down the last drop of wax.

Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere is pretty close to a prefect album in my book, but Zuma, Ragged Glory, Rust Never Sleeps, Re*ac*tor and especially the live album Weld are all contenders. And Live At The FIllmore East is a cracker too, the only quality recording of the original band with Danny Whitten on stage.

Trans (which actually doesn't have Crazy Horse on it) is great, and you can find used copies on ebay for next to nothing. It's the beginning of his weird 80s experiments in different genres, and the most successful one.

His recent albums have been a mixed bag but I can unconditionally recommend Chrome Dreams II from 2007, a really good album.

I agree with you on Chrome II, a great record. Prairie Wind was kind of hit and miss, but I loved The Painter. Living With War had some good moments, but overall didn't excite me too much.
