Common's UMC - Great Single, Blah Album

How is it Common's best song ever is from his most blah album? The fact that this track wasn't massive says so much about the sorry state of the industry.

I don't agree it was his best song ever. Not even close but
a good song on a weak album but it should have been expected
with Pharrell handling the production. It's like Timbaland and
Jermaine Dupri handling production for an LLCoolJ album.
A big mix of Apples and Oranges. I would have liked to see Common
work with Questlove and James Poyser again on the last release.
Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint

nod you got that right.

IMO "Like Water for Chocolate" is Common at his very best.
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I think fans of Madonna's Hard Candy would like that single though.

I like this track a gazillion times more anything off of Hard Candy.

Like Water for Chocolate is great, dense, challenging funk, and as an album, is by far his best.

But there's just something about this track that gets me. Common's weakness to me is he can take himself a little too seriously lyrically, and it's really nice to hear him just some fun over a party track that sounds like it could have come from Mantronix.

Besides the obvious Pharrell connection, it reminds of "Candy Shop"

Really?! I can't stand Candy Shop--this is so much more danceable and has such a better flow. Plus nobody's singing about Turkish Delight! smile

So which album do you see Common at his best then, if not "Like Water for Chocolate"????
