"Vibe" mag's propensity to embrace flava-of-the-week artists and its lightweight interviews impacted readership. Good riddance.

Basically how I feel.

Mary J. Blige owes VIBE big time. I also feel like VIBE did more to kill 2Pac & Biggie than any other media outlet. And I read every word of that ish. I hated the way the magazine failed to grow with its readership - instead trying to stay relevant to the 18-24 demo.

That doesn't make any damned sense. The girl is very pretty, and while not that good a singer, she at least sounds okay on record...why on God's green earth is this chile naked in sqatting position on a music magazine cover. FRONTAL. hmm?

Nasty.

It was a lot classier when it first started. I think the quality sank when Quincy left.

Good riddance! I also used to subscribe to Vibe but I had to cancel to subscription several years ago.It became nothing more than a lame shit hop magazine, focusing mostly on lousy rappers and weak R&B singers.

I'll say the same myself. I haven't really been into it since the 90's anyways. That was back when it was a little more diversified in its music and cultural content, even though it still targeted the urban market. I always looked to it as an urban version of SPIN magazine.

I remember when Prince was on the cover back in the summer of 1994. That was pretty cool and at a time where they still gave a damn about my hero.

Well i'm guessing she had to do something to get attention, because her singing is awful. Showing her goodies in the nude is probably one of her strengths. lol

It's really just about her only strength, huh? lol I guess she dances or something too, I've never watched a single video/performance by her (or heard more than 10 seconds of one of her songs) shrug

I saw that coming. The quality of the magazine has been falling for years. I used to subscribe to it but I had to stop cause it was just getting really bad. Maybe if it didn't become an almost completely hip-hop magazine, it may still be up and running. Guess we'll never know.

Nah...what you saw is the recession take down yet another magazine in an age where print is slowly becoming extinct in the face of the Internet...

VIBE was always just as much about hip hop as it was about R&B (Snoop was on the first cover...)...So your hate for hip hop in this context makes little sense in VIBE closing its doors...

Certainly, VIBE has gone through it's ups and down...the early 00's were particularly uneven...But over the last three years, there have been some great pieces in that mag...As someone who has most recently written and edited for that mag , I can honestly say I'm proud of a lot of the work we did...The DeBarge piece, the Oral History of Spike Lee's School Daze, the saga of the Dungeon Family (OutKast, Goodie Mob, ect...)..

There was good work to be found if you gave it a cahnce...

Long live VIBE...

I agree, the quality was becoming really bad.

But, I have a huge soft spot for Vibe. It started publication before all the blog sites, entertainment web media, etc. (when we used to have the patience to wait a month for "news"). It really was unique in highlighting "urban" (as cliched as that term may seem now) entertainment and some of the special editiions were really great.

Vibe Magazine To Be Relaunched Without Quincy Jones
August 2009

Vibe Magazine is set to be re-launched later this year as an online lifestyle resource.

The hip-hop monthly was founded by legendary producer Quincy Jones in 1993, and folded in June after struggling with the ever-changing media market.

InterMedia Partners have purchased the brand, and plan to relaunch it through the creation of a "Vibe lifestyle network", reports allhiphop.com.

It is set to be relaunched officially in November or December of this year.

The magazine will also resume printing next year, but will come out quarterly instead of monthly.

THOSE articles Murph mentioned were the best VIBE had to offer in the last few years. I hate we'll never see the 2nd part of the dungeon family article, though.
