Quincy Jones Wants 'Vibe' Back - Online Only
July 1
http://blogs.usatoday.com...rtainment/

Distraught Vibe magazine founder Quincy Jones says he may attempt to buy back the brand he created in 1993 but later sold.

“I’m trying to buy my magazine back now,” Jones told EbonyJet.com in a Tuesday phone call. “They just messed my magazine all up, but I’m gonna get it back. You better believe it, I’m’a take it online because print and all that stuff is over.”

Once he recovers from the death of his friend and protégé Michael Jackson, he plans to focus on Vibe. “We gotta get into the 21st century you know,” Jones said. “Print and all that stuff is over, we gotta remember that. The Chicago Tribune, The Seattle Post Intelligencer. The Miami Herald. They’re over the same way as the record business. We have got to get into this century.”

There have always been sexy images on album and magazine covers but they are usually sensual and sexy looking. Even "Playboy" covers are artistically done. There's nothing artistic looking about this cover at all. It looks like one of those DVD covers for a black porno movie from the image, all the way down to the generic fonts in the headlines. It just screams cheap and sleazy.

i agree!

Quincy actually has a very good idea there to revitalize the brand.

As someone that works in the publishing industry, I think all magazines' days are numbered. I need to find a new line of work. sad

I've had access to an s-load of Music related magazines over the years and have definitely noticed that they've become a lot thinner recently.

Right, so what is Quincy going on about? He didn't get the thing about blogs until after VIBE (as many "music magazines") jumped the shark? Really he didn't think of changing it when Mary J. Blige started complaining about her covers? lol REALLY? lol

As great as Quincy is, I don't think he realizes his efforts to do a magazine AND a TV show (let's not forget MadTV) were futile to say the least. Both those venues got some success but not to the level of his own success in the 1980s. If Quincy had been really paying attention to VIBE, we wouldn't be saying RIP to it now would we? wink

I don't know.. even though I picked up their last issue... I only bought maybe one issue per year, compared to monthly ten years ago.

I missed Scratch magazine more than this.

It's always those "little engines that could" that always end up closing up shop because consumerism was hard to reach.

True. I remember when both ventures started I thought they were really going to be something big. Altho starting up a magazine is nothing to sneeze at. I believe it to be one of the most difficult ventures to get started. The fact that they both declined to such low levels rather than improving over time says a lot.

But Vibe was more ads than information.
And running an article next to an ad for the artist . . . . .

While i'm kinda sorta glad that Q might be doing this, I have to disagree with his assessment that "Print and all that stuff is over". I think if you have a good, quality product, it would be popular. Then again, he might be fighting an uphill battles since, as it's been pointed out:

• Did you first think Prince was gay? •

Wendy: He’s a girl, for sure, but he’s not gay. He looked at me like a gay woman would look at another woman. Lisa: Totally. He’s like a fancy lesbian.
